Records from Indonesia. Maluku Sea, Halmahera Sea ( Hansen 1910), Seram Sea, Celebes Sea ( Fage 1941), northern part of Kei Besar Island, between Kei Kecil and Kei Besar Island, and eastern and southern parts of Jamdena Island, Arafura Sea ( Casanova 1996). Depth range: 230–4940 m.
Remarks. Gnathophausia elegans can be recognized by two main characteristics: the ventrolateral keels on the carapace extend post-dorsally and merge into the marginal keels, and the sixth abdominal pleura is armed with a posterior ventral spine ( Meland & Aas 2013).
