Body slender (a=64–104), 880 to 1720 µm long, slightly ventrally curved to nearly straight when heat­killed. Cuticle thin, marked with fine transverse striae. Lateral field with four incisures. Incisures occupying one­third of body width at midbody. Head offset, lip region smooth, anteriorly flattened, slightly narrower than body. Stylet 11 to 13 µm long, small basal knobs present. Anterior portion of stylet sharply pointed, less than one­half stylet length. Procorpus elongate­cylindrical, more than twice as long as metacorpus. Metacorpus elongate­oval, about twice as long as wide; valves prominent, centrally situated. Excretory pore 71 to 116 µm from head apex. Nerve ring about one and one­half body widths below metacorpus. Esophageal glands 80 to 298 µm long, overlapping intestine dorso­laterally. Reproductive system prodelphic; gonad well developed, outstretched, about two­thirds to three­fourths body lengths long. Oocytes arranged in single row posteriorly, and several rows anteriorly. Postuterine sac 34 to 119 µm long, extending about one­half to four­fifths of vulva­anus distance. Vulva­anus distance 53 to 143 µm. Vulva situated well posteriad (V=86–92), lips not protuberant, flap absent. Tail elongatesubcylindrical, one and one­half to two anal body widths long. Tail terminus pointed, mucronate.

Testis single, anteriorly outstretched, spermatocytes in several rows. Spicules paired, not fused, small (8–13 µm); rostrum pointed, apex rounded ( Figs. 7 & 9 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ). Tail short (c=53– 90), conoid, without curvature; terminus pointed, mucronate. Bursa present, enveloping distal one­third to two­fifths of tail. Gubernaculum absent. Three pairs of post­cloacal papillae present: first pair just post­cloacal, second and third pairs ventro­submedian, near base of bursa.

Diagnosis. Parasitaphelenchus dongguanensis is characterized by the very long (880– 1720 µm), and slender (a=64–134) female and male bodies; short, straight female and male tails (c=48–102); the extreme posterior location of the vulva (V=86–92); long postuterine sac (34–119 µm); and the presence of a bursa and three pairs of post­cloacal papillae on the male tail. It is also characterized by a short stylet (11–13 µm) with small basal knobs, and small spicules (8–13 µm) with a rounded apex and pointed rostrum.

Relationships. P. dongguanensis is similar to P. papillatus ( Fuchs, 1937) T. Goodey, 1951 ; P. uncinatus (Fuchs, 1929) Fuchs, 1930 ; and P. acuminati Rühm, 1956 in having three pairs of papillae. It is similar to P. procerus Massey, 1974 in stylet length (11–13 µm), and in female tail shape.

P. dongguanensis differs from P. papillatus in having a slenderer female body (a=64– 104 vs a=43.3–44.5), slenderer male body (a=84–134 vs a=52–66.7), significantly shorter stylet (11–13 µm vs 21–23 µm), and smaller spicules (8–13 µm vs 18–19 µm). It differs from P. acuminati in having a slenderer female body (a=64–104 vs a=45.6–53.9), slenderer male body (a=84–134 vs a=62.5), shorter stylet (11–13 µm vs 15–16 µm), and in having three pairs of post­cloacal papillae versus two pairs in P. acuminati . P. uncinatus differs from P. dongguanensis in the stouter female body (a=51.3) stouter male body (a=41), and in having one pair of post­cloacal papillae versus three pairs in P. dongguanensis . P. procerus differs from P. dongguanensis in having a stouter male body (a=75.2– 82.5), longer female body (1760–1940 µm vs 880–1720 µm), and in having two pairs of papillae versus three pairs in P. dongguanensis .
