Trichromothrips View in CoL sp. 1: Okajima, 2000: 103.

Female. Distended body length 1.2–1.7 mm. Body strongly bicoloured, without internal red pigment but often with a small red area near the ovipositor. Head dark brown with conelike pale area medially on posterior margin ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 6 – 8 ). Antennal segments I to II dark brown, III yellowish white with apex shaded and often with basal third shaded including pedicel, IV to V yellowish white with distal third brown, VI brown with basal half yellowish white, VII to VIII brown. Pronotum with dark brown lateral stripes, large median triangular area yellowish white ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 6 – 8 ); pterothorax yellowish white with tegula shaded; fore wing uniformly dark brown with a small pale area near base; all legs yellowish white. Abdominal segments I to VI yellowish white, tergum VI often slightly shaded at middle along antecostal line ( Fig. 9), segments VII to IX dark brown, segment X dark brown with apex slightly pale. Prominent body setae shaded.

Head 1.0–1.2 times as long as wide, dorsal surface distinctly sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae on basal third, strongly produced in front of fore ocellus, strongly constricted behind compound eyes with cheeks rounded ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 6 – 8 ). Compound eyes almost as long as length of cheeks, without pigmented ommatidia. Ocellar setae II about half length of setae III, setae III situated between hind ocelli and 2.5–5.3 times as long as distance between their bases ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 6 – 8 ). Antennal segment IV usually the longest, often subequal to segment VI; sensecone of segments III and IV usually reaching at least to basal third and nearly to basal half of next segment, each 0.5–0.9 times and 0.6–0.8 times as long as their segments ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6 – 8 ). Comments. This new species is vivid pale greenish yellow at the pale areas when alive. In general structure and coloration this species is similar to the Indian species T. alis , according to its original author ( Bhatti, 1967, 2000). Among Thripidae , these two species shares an unusual feature in that the base of antennal segment III is shaded. T. alis is known only from the holotype female, and we have not been able to study this specimen in the collection of the Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata. However , we sent slides of the Japanese species collected at Yokohama to Dr. Bhatti who compared these with notes from when he last studied the holotype of T. alis in 1963. The Japanese species seems to differ from alis in having longer sense cones of antennal segments III and IV, and different pronotal sculpture and chaetotaxy. The published illustrations ( Bhatti, 2000: figs, 11, 32– 34, 77) appear to support this: in alis , the sense cones of antennal segments III and IV reach the extreme base or at most the basal fourth of the next segments, many pronotal sculpture lines are distinct laterally, the pronotal posteroangular outer setae are almost the same length as the inner setae, and abdominal tergum IX lacks campaniform sensilla (only from fig. 77). In contrast, in the new species the sense cones of antennal segments III and IV reach the basal third of the next segments, pronotal sculpture lines are indistinct, the pronotal posteroangular outer setae are distinctly shorter than the inner setae, and tergum IX has a posterior pair of campaniform sensilla (although Taiwanese specimens often lack campaniform sensilla or have only one sensillum).

The characteristics of the female of this new species distinctly indicate relationships to the bellus section. However, the male has drepanae on abdominal tergum IX and five glandular areas on the sterna, whereas males of the other species in the bellus section ( Bhatti, 2000) lack drepanae on tergum X and have numerous scattered glandular areas on the sterna.

According to Laurence Mound (personal communication), two females collected from the tip of Cape York in Northern Australia appear to be this species.
