Diagnosis. Manus of major cheliped as long as high or slightly elongate, lower and upper margins keeled, distal margin with notch, outer lateral surface with single longitudinal ridge on fixed finger extending onto manus.

Type material. Holotype: HNHM M.86.412A, right propodus . Paratypes: HNHM M.86.368 (2 propodi); HNHM M.86.63 (50 propodi); HNHM M.86.246 (30 propodi) ; HNHM M.86.412 (100 propodi). All specimens are major cheliped (P1) elements coming from the Tétény-plateau (MA: HNHM M.86.368), Örs vezér tere ( MOE: HNHM M.86.63), Gyakorló út ( MGY: HNHM M.86.246) and Kerepesi út ( MKC: HNHM M.86.412) localities in Budapest, Hungary .

Müller (1976) described the species based on rich but not explicitly specified material (“többszáz olló” = “hun- dreds of claws”); only the holotype was selected. According to ICZN art. 72.1.1, all the specimens on which the author established a nominal species-group taxon represent the type series and according to ICZN art. 72.4.5, when an author designates a holotype, then the other specimens of the type series are paratypes. Thus, all those “többszáz olló” are considered paratypes. In this respect, the listing of 184 paratypes given by Müller (1984, p. 52; and repeated herein) is the only specification of the previously established type series and as such is considered valid.

Additional material. Numerous isolated major cheliped (P1) propodi from the localities of the Budapest area: Gyakorló út ( MGY: HNHM INV 2019.331), Örs vezér tere ( MOE: HNHM INV 2019.170), and Tétény-plateau ( MBK: HNHM M.86.503, MDG: HNHM M.86.154, MFK: HNHM M.86.529).

Description. Major cheliped (P1) manus rectangular, as long as high or slightly elongate (L/H≤1.5). Both lower and upper margins sharply keeled; upper margin slightly arched, parallel to lower one. Outer lateral surface smooth, inner lateral surface undulating (muscle scars) near lower margin. Distal margin rounded, with rounded notch (incision) below the articulation with dactylus. Fixed finger relatively slender, straight, with sharp tip pointing upwards; lateral surface with single longitudinal ridge running onto manus; occlusal surface finely serrated with two blunt teeth, one, almost rudimentary, situated near the proximal end of finger, the larger one positioned near distal end.

Occurrence. The species has been reported from the lower Badenian of Mátraverebély-Szentkút and the upper Badenian of the Budapest area, including the localities (three-letter codes follows Müller 1984) of Kerepesi út (MKC), Tétény-plateau (MA, MBK, MDG, MFK), Örs vezér tere (MOE) and Gyakorló út (MGY). More details on the geology of the locations can be found in Müller (1984).

Remarks. Calliax kerepesiensis comb. nov. is comparatively smaller than its roughly coeval congener C. miche- lottii A. Milne-Edwards, 1860 (Hyžný & Gašparič 2014). The latter species is characterized with two distinct longitu- dinal ridges on the fixed finger, whereas there is only one, which is less-developed in C. kerepesiensis comb. nov.

Müller (1984) noted the presence of “a characteristic undulating region” on the inner lateral surface of the major cheliped manus. This character actually is present in many other ghost shrimps and is related to muscle attachments. These, so called muscle scars, have recently been discussed at length by Klompmaker et al. (2019).
