Gilpinia socia (Klug, 1812)

( Figs 8G, H View FIGURES 8 , 9F, G View FIGURES 9 )

Ovipositor. Lance dorsally with median furrow, with short apical cleft (often difficult to see), in lateral view with dorsal margin roundly convex ( Figs 8G, H View FIGURES 8 ); posterior projection on processus articularis very small, mostly fused with main body of lance, in dorsal view narrow, and in lateral view ventrally slightly expanded beyond main body of lance. Lancet with ventral margin convex at second annulus and distinctly concave on apical half ( Figs 9F, G View FIGURES 9 ); sclerotized band of radix sharply bent and much wider than olistheter at twisted part (arrowed part); lamnium with 13–15 annuli, length from ventral end of first ctenidium to apex 2.5–2.6 × maximum width; sclerite before first an- nulus narrow; basal two or three ctenidia arched, more apical ctenidia nearly straight; first annulus without serrula, with ctenidium rather widely separated from ventral margin of lancet; serrula of second annulus larger than other serrulae, with precalcar rather close to postcalcar; serrulae of second to seventh annuli distinctly protruding.

Material examined. 1♀ ( Fig. 9F View FIGURES 9 ), Austria, Wien; 1♀ ( Figs 8G, H View FIGURES 8 , 9G View FIGURES 9 ), “ CZECHOSLOVAKIA: bred v-vi.1936. e. larvae 1935. K. R. S.Morris. B.M.1936-204” .

Remarks. The lance of this species is characterized by having a very small posterior projection on the processus articularis and a dorsal median furrow. The lancet of this species is different from those of the other European and Japanese species of the G. socia group in having the serrulae of second to seventh annuli distinctly protruding and the ventral margin distinctly concave on apical half. Similar lancets are found in G. leksawasdii Smith, 1983 from Thailand and G. jinghongensis Xiao and Huang, 1984 , G. jingxii Xiao and Huang, 1984 , G. lipuensis Xiao and Huang, 1985 , G. tabulaeformis Xiao, 1992 , and G. hebedentata Xu, 1997 from China (see fig. 1 in Smith 1983, figs 4, 5 in Xiao et al. 1984, fig. 24 in Xiao et al. 1985, fig. 3 in Xiao 1992, and fig. 1 in Xu 1997).
