The name refers to the dark color of this species.

Male

Frons brown, broader than long, with 40­60 hairs and microsetae reduced to minute pale spots. Antials closer to anterolateral bristles than to each other and slightly lower on frons. Pre­ocellars likewise with respect to mediolaterals or the four bristles almost equally spaced, and MLs slightly lower on frons. Postpedicel pale brown, about as long as broad, subglobose but ending in a distinctly pointed apex. Palp viewed from above about 0.6x as wide as postpedicel, straw yellow to slightly dusky; with five bristles at apex, one of which is greatly reduced, and at least three times as many small hairs below segment 2. Yellowish brown labrum about as wide as palp. Labella pale. Thorax brown. Scutellum with an anterior pair of hairs (subequal to those at rear of scutum between dorsocentral bristles) and a posterior pair of bristles. Abdominal tergites brown with minute hairs, which are only slightly longer at rear of T6. Venter pale straw yellow with minute hairs below segments 3­ 5 and 2­4 longer bristles at rear of 5. Hypopygium brown, including cerci of anal tube. Legs straw yellow variably tinged brown, but hind femur with brown dorsal edge, apical third and most of ventral third in basal two thirds. Front tibia with 4­6 dorsal spines. Dorsal hair palisade of mid tibia only extends about a quarter of length. Hind tibia lacks isolated bristles in upper three quarters. Base of hind femur as Figs 24­25 View FIGURES 24 ­ 25 , with the number of spinules ranging from 4­8 (usually with 5 or 6) and the small notch just beyond these spinules ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 24 ­ 25 ) varying in size. Wings 1.3­1.8 mm long. Costal index 0.45­0.47. Costal ratios 7­11: 1.1­2.3: 1. Costal cilia 0.04­0.05 mm long. Hair at base of vein 3 subequal to costal cilia of section 1 or a little weaker and shorter. Veins yellowish grey, but 7 absent. Membrane almost colorless. Haltere knob whitish yellow.
