Anoreina pinimaiuba Martins & Galileo, 2008: 72 View in CoL , fig. 4. Syn. nov.

Host plant: Eschweilera coriacea View in CoL (DC.) S. A. Mori ( Lecythidaceae View in CoL ).

Bates (1861) described Oreodera simplex View in CoL ( Figs 108–110 View FIGURES 106 – 110. 106 ) from Brazil (Amazonas), based on one specimen: a male. Martins & Galileo (2008) described Anoreina pinimaiuba View in CoL ( Figs. 106, 107 View FIGURES 106 – 110. 106 ) from Brazil (Amazonas), based on two specimens: a male and a female.

Examination of the male holotype ( Fig. 106 View FIGURES 106 – 110. 106 ) and female paratype ( Fig. 107 View FIGURES 106 – 110. 106 ) of Anoreina pinimaiuba View in CoL , the photograph of the holotype of Oreodera simplex View in CoL , and the original descriptions and 23 specimens of Oreodera simplex View in CoL , revealed two differences between the holotypes: the aspect of the yellowish pubescence and the punctation. Analyzing 25 specimens, including the paratype of Anoreina pinimaiuba View in CoL , revealed considerable variation in the color pattern of the elytra ( Figs. 106–110 View FIGURES 106 – 110. 106 ) which can form isolated spots to transverse bands, and the elytral punctation, which can be restricted to the basal half or extend to the apices. We conclude that Anoreina pinimaiuba View in CoL is an extreme morphological variant of Oreodera simplex View in CoL , and this was only possible to be observed through an examination of a series of specimens. Its presence in Oreodera View in CoL is confirmed by the presence on the pronotum of one pair of slightly prominent tubercles along with having the elytral disc depressed. Despite Bates (1861) and Martins & Galileo (2008) considered the pronotum without tubercles, it is possible to observe one pair of slightly prominent tubercles, unlike other species of Anoreina View in CoL .
