This species appears to be more widespread than previously known with many populations exhibiting differing phenotypes. We found only minor differences among populations, however. These range from entirely dark brown specimens from Montana; mostly red specimens with large medial fasciae from Utah; large, bright orange-red specimens from southern California; and dark red specimens with large fasciae from over 3000 m in Nevada. Many of these populations are separable by color pattern; however, the combined differences among them encompass the variation within the species as a whole. Therefore, we have chosen to recognize P. vulneratus View in CoL with its many color variations as a single species.
