( Figs. 2 View FIGURES 2 – 3. 1 , 4, 5 View FIGURES 4 – 7 and 8 View FIGURE 8 )

Type locality. Panama, Cerro Jefe (9.2333; -79.3500)

Etymology. The name refers to the large size of the ventral opening of phygophore. Latin: latus (f.), broad, wide.

Male holotype. PANAMA, Panama: Cerro Jefe, 9.VI. 1985, E. Riley & D. Rider, [9.2333; -79.3500], Alitocoris sp. LHR’ 85 (DBTC). (AMNH collection number: AMNH _ IZC 00114311 ). GoogleMaps

Paratype. Female. PANAMA, Panama: Cerro Jefe, 18.VII. 1995, C. W. & L. B. O’Brien, [9.2333; -79.3500], Alitocoris sp det. J. E. Eger, 2004 (JEE). (AMNH collection number: AMNH _ IZC 00114312 ). GoogleMaps

Description. General color black, punctures concolor. Maculae on apex of radial vein of corium small, yellow.

Antennal segments I to III and basal half of IV dark brown, apical half of IV and V yellowish; segments ratio: I>II<III>IV<V, II the shortest and III subequal to V in length. Rostrum yellowish, second segment reaching mesocoxae and apex reaching posterior margin of urosternite III; segments ratio: I<II>III>IV.

Pronotum with punctures denser and rougher than head; anterolateral margins with even crenulation. Scutellum with 1 + 1 yellowish spots next to the fovea. Corium with yellow macula on apex of radial vein, size equivalent to ocellus. Legs brown with darker femora and tibiae.

Male. Measurements (n= 1). Head length, 2.40; width, 2.70; pronotum length, 2.65; width, 6.13; scutellum length, 4.36; width, 3.68; length of antennal segments: I, 0.78; II, 0.47; III, 1.89; IV, 1.09; V, 1.86; length of labium segments: I, 0.80; II, 1.70; III, 1.10; IV, 0.95; total length, 12.01; abdominal width, 6.86.

Genitalia. Apex of foliaceus projection of the inferior layer of ventral rim with a small carina bearing 1 + 1 spine lateral to segment X ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 4 – 7 ; pil, ca); posterior margin of ventral rim with 1 + 1 convex projection, formed by the posterior limit of the subrectangular expansion of the inferior layer of ventral rim ( Figs. 4–5 View FIGURES 4 – 7 ). Rectangular paired projections of inferior layer of ventral rim tumescent below the ventral opening ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 4 – 7 , rp). Ventral opening broad, about three times wider than long ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 4 – 7 ; vr). Median conical projection of inferior layer of ventral rim reaching the margin of ventral opening ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 4 – 7 , cp).

Female. Measurements (n= 1). Head length, 2.27; width, 2.65; pronotum length, 2.71; width, 6.36; scutellum length, 4.66; width, 3.53; length of antennal segments: I, 0.70; II, 0.45; III, 1.75; IV, 1.10; V, 1.80; length of labium segments: I, 1.00; II, 2.00; III, 1.40; IV, 1.25; total length, 12.90; abdominal width, 7.20.

Genitalia. Genital plates slightly displaced preventing the description of some features ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ). Posterior margin of gonocoxites 8 convex, projected over the base of laterotergites 9, and deflected between sutural angles and the lateral margin of laterotergites 9; disc of gonocoxites 8 with calluses on middle closer to the posterior margin ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ; gc 8, la 9). Laterotergites 8 with spiracle raised by a callus and placed posteriorly to the lateral angle of gonocoxites 8 ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ; gc 8, la 8). Laterotergites 9 depressed medially; sutural margins deflected, on the same level of the lateral margins ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ; la 9).

Comments. This species was included as “sp. 05” in the phylogeny of the Herrichella clade ( Garbelotto et al. 2013). Stapecolis latus sp. nov. differ from S. bimaculatus sp. nov. beside key characters, by the anterolateral margins of pronotum even crenulated; on the male genitalia by the presence of 1 + 1 spine on the carina at the apex of foliaceus expansions of the inferior layer of ventral rim ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 4 – 7 ; ca), the rectangular projections of the inferior layer of ventral rim tumescent, and the broad ventral opening of pygophore ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 4 – 7 ; rp, vr).
