(Fig. 9A; Fig. 9-1A–F)

Zheng, 1994: 351, 352 ( Lepidophallus ; Type locality: China: Sichuan, Mt. Qincheng, Guanxian, 1000 m); Herman, 2001a: 3659 (catalog); Smetana, 2004: 689 (catalog; Sichuan); Bordoni, 2008: 58 ( Megalinus ; species list of Megalinus ).

Type material: male, with labels as follows: “ HOLOTYPUS, Lepidophallus cinnamomeus sp. nov. det. Zheng ” / “ 1982.VII.20 ” / “ Sichuan, Qingchengshan ” ( CZ) .

Description

Measurements. BL=9.0 mm, FL= 5.5 mm, HL= 1.7 mm, HW= 1.4 mm, PL= 1.8 mm, PW= 1.2 mm, EL= 1.8 mm, EW= 1.8 mm.

Body cylindrical, large sized. Body dark brown, bearing yellowish soft setae on dorsal surface of head. Antennae brown, basal three antennomeres smooth and darker. Legs dark brown, except tarsi brown. Maxillary and labial palpi entirely brown.

Head (Fig. 9A). Oblong (HL to HW ratio 1.4), temple obviously widened posteriorly, posterior angles quite rounded. Dorsal integument shiny, without microsculpture, but densely distributed with round, deep, medium-sized punctures, interspaces between punctures less than half of punctures’ diameter, except a narrow, impunctate longitudinal median strip. Each side of cranium also with frontal puncture on epistoma, anterolateral puncture near antennal insertion, five smaller punctures on frontal region, midlateral puncture approximately a distance of four punctures’ diameter from dorsal margin of eye, temporal puncture at posterior 1/8, and occipital puncture at lateral 1/3; deflexed portion of head bearing 5–6 rows of small punctures. Anterior 2/3 of frontal furrows parallel, convergent in posterior 1/3, deep and long as anteocular furrows. Anteocular furrows nearly arriving line connecting posterior 1/3 of each eye. Eye median sized, slightly longer than 1/3 of temporal length (eye: temple = 0.38:1.0 mm), protruding laterad. Epistoma protruding forwards, of subrectangular shape, anterior margin subtruncated. Distance between antennal insertions 0.35 mm, slightly longer than that from antenna to eye (0.33 mm).

Antennae. Scape stout, thickened apically, extraordinarily longer than three subsequent antennomeres combined, 0.95 mm; antennomeres II and III both elongate and of same length, ca. 0.25 mm; IV and V transverse, subequal in length, 0.15 mm; last antennomere of medium length, 0.25 mm, slightly shorter than length of preceding two antennomeres combined.

Neck. Medium width (0.50 mm), slightly wider than 1/3 of head width.

Pronotum (Fig. 9A). Subrectangular, distinctly elongated (PL to PW ratio 1.6), longer than head, but obviously narrower. Anterior angles not well-developed and widely rounded, not distinctly protruding, anterior margins distinctly oblique, lateral margins convergent backwards, posterior angles broadly rounded. Integument shiny, extensively distributed with numerous rows of median-sized, setiferous punctures, except impunctate longitudinal median strip (ca. width of 0.2 mm).

Mesoscutellum. Shiny, extensively covered with mixed microsculpture combined of microstriae and well developed, lateral margins widened posteriorly, hind margin arcuate backwards. Integument shiny and flattened, without microsculpture; each elytron with 14–16 rows of punctures, which smaller than those on head and pronotum, interspaces between them less than a puncture’s diameter; deflexed portion with 7–9 rows of smaller punctures.

Abdomen. Cylindrical, broadest at segment VI. Tergites III–VII shiny, covered with shallow transverse microstriae, and also bearing small setiferous punctures, interspaces between punctures near 1–2 punctures’ diameter, denser laterobasally; each segment with a punctate basal impression, which bearing transverse microstriae mixed with isodiametric mesh at lateral portion. All abdominal sternites shiny, with microsculpture and setiferous punctures as those on tergites.

Male. Abdominal segment VIII entirely covered with setiferous punctures, except a narrow medial longitudinal impunctate band; posterior margins of tergite VIII broadly arcuate with a small median notch, that of sternite VIII subtruncated (Fig. 9-1A, B). Tergite IX symmetrical, connected mediobasally. Sternite IX symmetrical, with slightly arcuate base and sinuate posterior margin (Fig. 9-1C). Tergite X symmetrical, nearly semicircle, base portion narrow and arcuate, posterior margin broadly emarginated (Fig. 9-1D), in situ broadly exposed between tergite IX. Median lobe of aedeagus subelliptical and large sized (Fig. 9-1E), basal piece without transparent, membranous medial-longitudinal band, anterior portion cylindrical (Fig. 9-1F), 0.31 mm; basal bulb 0.88 mm long. Parameres symmetrical, long, slightly shorter than 1/2 of basal bulb length. Internal sac, straight, thin and coiled basally.

Female. Unknown.

Distribution. China (Sichuan).

Remarks. This species could be distinguished from its congeners by: 1) densely punctation in head, pronotum and elytra; 2) shape of pronotum: anterior angles of pronotum widely rounded and not protruding, anterior margins distinctly oblique, lateral margins convergent backwards; 3) posterior margin of male tergite VIII broadly arcuate with a small median notch; 4) shape of male sternite IX; 5) long parameres; 6) inner sac very thin and straight, just coiled basally.
