Diagnosis: Specimen complete (TERE-3 E3M5T1), 124 segments, 44mm long; thorax 2.2mm wide Eyespots present, laterally. Branchiae branched on segments 2–4, equal-sized. Fourteen pairs of nephridial papillae on segments 3 and 6–18. About 80 pairs of notopodia; notochaetae of two types, anterior chaetae almost straight, bilimbate in middle region, distally denticulate, posterior chaetae distally curved, trumpet-like, alimbate, distally denticulate. Neuropodia with avicular uncini MF:10–12:8–10.
Staining pattern: Only the ventral shields and notopodial glandular tissue stain deeply.
Variations: Thorax has a variable number of pairs of notopodia with chaetae, from 20–124; this number does not depend on the size of the worm. One specimen from Margarita Island is complete, with 53 segments and 44 pairs of notopodia (relation segments/pairs of notopodia =1.2); specimens from Veracruz are complete, with 63 segments and 32 pairs of notopodia (1.96), and 103 segments and 31 pairs of notopodia (3.32). Nine specimens from Chacmochuk are complete having, in average, 79 segments and 24 pairs of notopodia (3.3). Thus, as the number is variable, it cannot be used a diagnostic character, as it is used in many other terebellid genera. The nephridial papillae could be present from segments 6–10 or even to 12 in some other specimens.
Discussion: A complete description of the species is given by Londoño-Mesa and Carrera-Parra (2005). Holthe (1986a) mentioned that Leprea rubra Verrill, 1873 , had to be replaced by Terebella verrilli comb. nov., because it was a junior homonym of Terebella rubra Risso.
Type locality: Vineyard Sound , Massachusetts, USA .
Distribution: Vineyard Sound, Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Mexican Caribbean , Panama and Lesser Antilles (Margarita, Aruba, Bonaire, Barbados, and Martinique). Shallow water to 236m ..
