Diagnosis

Frontal vitta brownish with anterior margin reddish, covered with golden yellow pollinosity, particularly on anterior region; length of postpedicel twice the length of pedicel; scutum with three brown vittae, median vitta more conspicuous, vittae following dc setae inconspicuous up to the posterior portion of scutum; male terminalia with cercal plate enlarged, concave and slightly pointed apically.

Description

Male holotype. Body length 2.4 mm; wing length 2.7 mm.

Head. Eye bare. Frontal vitta brownish with anterior margin reddish, covered with golden yellow pollinosity, particularly on anterior region. Interocular space 0.4 mm. Two pairs of fr setae, with intercalated setulae. Orb two pairs, anterior pair lateroclinate, posterior pair reclinate. Ocellar tubercle with golden yellow pollinosity; one pair of oc, proclinate and developed, surrounded by a few setulae. Poc parallel. Fronto-orbital plate, parafacial, gena and antenna with golden yellow pollinosity. Parafacial without short setae. Scape yellow with a long dorsal seta. Pedicel yellow with short dorsal setae. Postpedicel dark brown, twice the length of pedicel. Arista brown with basal third yellow, with short pubescence, rays shorter than width of base of arista. Palpus light brown, flat and claviform.

Thorax: Brown with golden yellow pollinosity; scutum and scutellum greyish with golden yellow pollinosity, less dense at anterior portion of scutum; a pronounced brown vitta along acr setae, and a faint vitta on posterior portion of dc area. Acr 2–3:3, irregular rows. Dc 2:3, first presutural seta with half the length of second presutural seta. Postpronotum with three setae well-developed. Pra two, seta closest to suture longer. Proepimeral setae two, seta closest to spiracle longer. Katepisternal setae1:1, katespisternum with short setulae.

Wing. Hyaline. Calypter whitish. Haltere whitish.

Legs. Coxae and femora brown; trochanters, apex of femora, fore and mid tibiae yellow; hind tibiae yellow on basal half, brown apically; tarsi brown, apex of fore tarsomere yellow and pulvilli yellowish. Fore femur on basal half of av surface with a row of short setae, setae on apical half shorter; d surface with a series of sparse setae; pd surface with a row of setae; p surface setulose, with thin setae; pv surface with a series of long, sparse setae on apical half; v surface on basal third with short setae. Fore tibia on d surface with a pre-apical seta; ad surface with a seta on apex of apical third and with pre-apical setae; pv and v surfaces with an apical seta. Fore first tarsomere with strong and short basal setae on ventral surface. Mid femur with a ventral pre-apical constriction; av surface with a row of short sparse setae, setae closer together and with hooked apex on apical half; ad surface on basal half with short setae extending toward a surface, pre-apex with two short setae; p surface with two or three pre-apical differentiated setae; pv surface with one basal differentiated seta and one row of short, hooked setae; v surface with a row of short hooked setae, near pv row. Mid tibia on v surface setulose, with two pre-apical setae, one short and one long; a surface with an apical seta; av surface with an apical long seta; ad surface with a developed pre-apical seta; pd surface with a short apical seta; p surface with one median and one apical seta; pv surface with a short apical seta. Hind coxa with one seta on posterior margin. Hind femur on ad surface with a row of setae with curved apices; av surface with two developed pre-apical setae curved apically, and a row of more ventral, short setae; v surface with short setae on basal third; d surface with a pre-apical seta; pd surface with a short pre-apical seta; pv surface with a row of short setae; p surface bare on apical half. Hind tibia on d surface with one median and one pre-apical setae; a surface with a pre-apical short seta; ad surface with one median and one pre-apical seta; av surface with one median and one apical developed seta; pv surface with an apical developed seta. Hind first tarsomere strongly setulose on base of ventral surface.

Abdomen. Greyish with syntergite 1+2 and tergites 3–5 brownish on apical half. Sternite 1 bare. Sternite 5 ( Figure 2A View Figure 2 ): large, with two sclerotized, concave and elongated plates, basal area setulose with strongly developed setae; plates joined by a membrane covered with short setae. Terminalia ( Figures 3A View Figure 3 , 4A View Figure 4 ): epandrium longer than wide, on basal half with weakly developed setae, with long acute projections on latero-apical portion; surstylus triangular, shorter than latero-apical epandrial projections, articulated with epandrium and with short and strong setae; cercal plate enlarged and concave, slightly pointed and strongly setulose apically. Hypandrium and associated structures as in Figure 5A View Figure 5 .

Female. Unknown.

Biological notes

According to collecting label data, this is a synanthropic species found in rural areas, associated with decomposing organic matter.

Comments

Euryomma aburrae sp. nov. and Euryomma tahami sp. nov. are morphologically similar. They differ mainly in characters of the male terminalia: in E. aburrae the epandrium is enlarged, the cercal plate is visibly larger and the basal area is less pointed ( Figures 3A View Figure 3 , 4A View Figure 4 ). We have decided to describe this species even though only one specimen was available. The male terminalia is very distinct and sufficient to separate E. aburrae from other Colombian species, and from other previously described species. The holotype is in perfect condition.

Etymology

The specific epithet, aburrae , refers to the indigenous people “Aburráes”, which inhabited the “Valle del Aburrá” (Antioquia, Colombia), type locality of the species before being decimated by the Spaniards. Noun in apposition .
