Bract 0.8–5.4 × 0.2–2.8 mm, deciduous, lanceolate, ovate or elliptic, concave or plane, apex acuminate, acute or rounded, base truncate or short petiolate, adaxial and abaxial surfaces pubescent, puberulent or with scattered trichomes to glabrous. Pedicel 0–1.6 mm long, cylindrical, pubescent, puberulent or with scattered trichomes. Bracteole 0.6–2.8 × 0.2–0.6 mm, deciduous, lanceolate or ovate, concave, apex acuminate or acute, base truncate, adaxial surface puberulent or with scattered trichomes to glabrous, abaxial surface puberulent or with scattered trichomes. Floral bud 2–3 × 1–2 mm, turbinate. Hypanthium 0.6–1.0 mm extending above the summit of the ovary, not tearing at anthesis, externally pubescent, puberulent or with scattered trichomes, glabrescent towards the apex, pellucid dots conspicuous (rarely inconspicuous), internally glabrous; calyx 4–5–merous, lobes 0.4–1.6 × 0.4–1.6 mm, distinct from the hypanthium, deciduous, depressed ovate to ovate, concave, apex rounded, base truncate, externally and internally puberulent or with scattered trichomes to glabrous; corolla 4–5– merous, petals light brown to white, 0.8–1.8 × 0.6–2.0 mm, depressed ovate to widely ovate, concave, apex rounded, base truncate, externally and internally puberulent or with scattered trichomes to glabrous; staminal ring 0.1–0.2 mm wide, glabrous, stamens 24–55, filament 1.6–4.0 mm long, white, glabrous, anther 0.24–0.40 × 0.24–0.32 mm, square, oblong or transversely oblong; ovary 0.6–1.0 × 0.8–1.2 mm, 2–locular, each locule with two ovules (rarely 3), style 3.6–5.0 mm long, glabrous, stigma punctiform, papillose. Fruit green when immature, reddish to vinaceous at maturity, 4–6 × 4–6 mm, depressed globose or globose, base rounded, glabrescent to glabrous, remnants of calyx lobes present or not; seeds 1–3.

Distribution and Habitat:— Myrcia densa is mainly distributed in the Espinhaço Range from the Diamantina Plateau to the Chapada Diamantina (up to 2000 m of elevation). It is also found at other high elevation areas, including the municipality of Monte Santo (Bahia state) and the Vale do Catimbau (Pernambuco state), rarely in lowland areas, such as the municipalities of Alagoinhas and Salvador (Bahia state), Igarassu (Pernambuco state), and Alhandra and Santa Rita (Paraíba state) ( Figure 17 View FIGURE 17 ).

The species inhabits different vegetation types in campo rupestre areas as carrasco, cerrado rupestre, grassy fields on sandy soil, riparian forests and rock outcrops. It is occasionally recorded in caatinga ( Filadélfia–Bahia state, and Buíque–Pernambuco state), grassy fields ( Igarassu ), sandy banks in coastal areas ( Salvador – Bahia state) and semideciduous forest ( Alagoinhas ). The distribution of Myrcia densa includes the Atlantic Forest , Caatinga and Cerrado domains .

Phenology:— Myrcia densa was collected in flower from September to March, with flowering peak in November- December and February. Fruits were found from August to September and from December to June (mature fruits in December, February and April).

Conservation Status:— The Area of Occupancy of Myrcia densa is 140 km 2, but this is probably underestimate because of the extremely wide distribution in campo rupestre. Myrcia densa has been recorded in protected areas and sometimes population density is very high. Myrcia densa is here classified as Least Concern (LC; IUCN 2001).

Discussion:— Myrcia densa morphology varies widely but it is well characterized by monopodial vegetative branching, cataphyll scars usually present only at the basal internodes of a new branch, keeled immature twigs ( Figure 3E View FIGURE 3 ), inconspicuous venation and a corymbiform inflorescence with only 1–2 branches at the base ( Figures 5E View FIGURE 5 , 7A View FIGURE 7 ). The species is similar to Myrcia ascendens and Myrcia mucugensis (see comments in these species about their differences).

A peculiar morphological variation of Myrcia densa is found in the region of the Morro do Pai Inácio (Chapada Diamantina – Bahia state): low shrubs with small leaves, very short internodes and immature strongly flattened twigs. Specimens with wider leaves, thick branches and inflorescence rachis are found in the region of Jacobina (Bahia state), the type locality of Myrcia jacobinensis ( Santos et al. 2016b) .
