Tribe Chaetarthriini Bedel, 1881 View in CoL Genus Chaetarthria Stephens, 1835

31– Chaetarthria similis Wollaston, 1864 Chaetarthria similis Wollaston 1864: 93

Type locality: Canary Island [“EI Monte of Grand Canary, as well as in Palma; Teneriffe and Gomera”].

Description: Hebauer 1993: 3; Hebauer and Klausnitzer 1998: 84.

Geographic distribution: PAL; SI.

References: Hebauer 1993, 1994, 2006; Hebauer and Klausnitzer 1998; Hansen 1999, 2004; Fikáček et al. 2015; Przewoźny and Fikáček 2016.

Remarks. Because of the small size (about 1.5 mm) of C. similis , it is possible that this species, which generally hides among detritus, has been overlooked for many years. It was synonymized with C. seminulum (Herbst, 1797) by Balfour-Browne (1939), but recognized as a distinct species by Hebauer (1993). In contrast to C. seminulum that occurs in Europe, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean region and from the British Isles to the Ural Mountains, C. similis seems to be restricted to the Mediterranean region and the southern part of Central Europe. According to Vorst and Cuppen (2003), many published records of C. seminulum from the Mediterranean region probably refer to C. similis .
