Diagnosis. This new species shows its close affinity to H. euryptera Boursin, 1937 ( China, Japan, Korea; figs 12, 23, 30) judging on the male genitalia. Externally there is no remarkable difference between them, in genitalia, and H. kononenkoi differs to H. euryptera by the more curved costal margin; the wider juxta; the less curved harpe rather than strongly curved; the two similar sized cornuti rather than one large and one small; the more granular corpus bursae.

Description. Adult ( Figs 10, 11 View FIGURES 1–15 )—Forewing length 13–16 mm in males (n= 171); 13 – 16 mm in females (n= 61). Antenna filiform in male, ciliate in female. Head and thorax covered with brown scales. Forewing ground color brown fringed with ochreous scales. Forewing antemedial line wave-like, postmedial line serrate; orbicular stigma round, reniform stigma wide bean-like, both surrounding with pale ochreous; submarginal line pale ochreous, rather straight; outer margin with small triangular dot locating at central part between each vein; marginal line pale ochreous; cilia brown. Hindwing slight paler than forewing, discal spot indistinct but traceable, marginal line pale ochreous, cilia brown. Abdomen brown.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 16–23 )—Uncus curved toward anterior part, apical part swollen with acute tip. Tegumen broad, peniculus well developed covered with long hair-like scales. Saccus tapered, V-shaped. Valva with costal and ventral margins slightly concave medially, respectively, subapical part of ventral margin protruded outwards; succulus elongated, harpe digitiform, slightly curved at apical part; cucullus extended, apex sharp; corona represented by 16 – 18 spines. Juxta plate-like, slightly concave at medial apical margin and extended as a small horn shape basally. Aedeagus about 4/5 length of valva. Carina with three sclerotized bands. Vesica with three diverticula, basal one membranous, other two medial ones covered with numerous spines. Tubular extension of vesica pointing posteriorly when fully swollen. Phallobase protruded anteriorly.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 24–30 )—Ovipositor elongated, papillae anales weak. Posterior apophyses thin, 1.5X length of anterior ones. Antrum wide, flat. Ductus bursae wide, flat, strongly sclerotized with ¼ section from posterior part bent. Bursae copulatrix sclerotized except apical part where ductus seminalis arising. Corpus bursae slightly granular with rigtht side sclerotized, without signum.

Distribution and bionomics. Endemic to Taiwan. The species is distributed in mid-elevation broad-leaved forests of Taiwan. The adults occur from September to November. Comparatively the population is larger than other Taiwanese congeneric species.

Etymology. Named after Dr. Vladimir Kononenko (Valdivostok) who first reviewed the Eastern Palearctic and Oriental taxa of the genus Hoplodrina in 1997.
