Measurements. Body length: 18.4–21.9 mm. CL: 0.65; EL: 2.73; ELS: 1.14; EW: 3.08; HL: 2.65; HW: 3.28; PO: 1.40; PL: 3.33; PW: 2.89.

Description. Medium to large-sized species. Body elongate, entirely black to dark brownish black; maxillary and labial palpi brunneous, antennae dark brunneous, with apical segments vaguely paler; legs dark brownish black, with tibiae and protarsus covered with brunneous pubescence; pubescence of dorsal side of head and pronotum dark rufous, and that of elytra and abdominal tergites almost the same.

Head of quadrangular shape, large and wide, distinctly wider than pronotum in dorsal view, considerably wider than long (ratio 1.24), with almost parallel lateral sides and rounded posterior angles. Eyes small and slightly protruding, distinctly shorter than tempora (ratio 0.46) in dorsal view; punctation and pubescence on dorsal surface of head relatively dense, puncture intervals smaller than diameters of punctures; no impunctate midline present. Gular sutures distinctly separated. Antenna moderately long, segment 3 longer than segment 2 (ratio 1.14), segments 4 to 7 longer than wide, becoming shorter gradually, segments 8–10 about as long as wide. Pronotum longer than wide (ratio 1.15), with almost parallel lateral sides; narrow marginal groove disappearing downwards at half of pronotal length; disc with distinct, entire impunctate midline; punctation and pubescence on disc about same as that on dorsal surface of head, slightly sparser. Pronotal hypomeron lacking microsetae. Scutellum finely punctate and setose on entire surface. Elytra short, moderately depressed at base, vaguely dilated posteriad; elytral length shorter than pronotum along midline, with a ratio of 0.34 along suture and a ratio of 0.82 along sides; punctation finer and denser than that on disc of head, combined with very dense microsculpture. Wings markedly reduced. Abdominal tergite 2 covered with moderately dense and fine punctures and pubescence on entire surface; all visible abdominal tergites finely and densely punctate, punctation slightly becoming sparser and coarser toward apex of abdomen; no yellowish tomentose pubescence present on visible tergites 4 and 5.

Male. Sternite 8 with moderately deep and obtusely triangular medioapical emargination ( Fig. 2-2 J View FIGURE 1 - 2 ). Sternite 9 with obtuse apical emargination wide and shallow, tapered basal portion relatively short ( Fig. 2-2 H View FIGURE 1 - 2 ). Tergite 10 elongate, evenly narrowed toward widely arcuate apex, sparsely setose, with apical half strongly sclerotized ( Fig. 2-2 A View FIGURE 1 - 2 ). Aedeagus large and elongate ( Figs. 2-1 B, C, 2-2 B–D View FIGURE 1 - 2 ); median lobe simple and elongate, shaped as in Fig. 2-2 F View FIGURE 1 - 2 ; paramere also elongate; sensory peg setae arranged along apical margin of paramere, not numerous ( Figs. 2- 1 D, 2-2 G View FIGURE 1 - 2 ).

Female. Apical portion of second gonocoxite relatively narrow ( Figs. 2-1 E, 2- 2 I View FIGURE 1 - 2 ). Tergite 10 of female relatively narrow, with strongly sclerotized apical portion and subtruncate apex, sparsely setose ( Fig. 2-2 E View FIGURE 1 - 2 ).

Distribution. Ocypus denticulminis sp. nov. is at present known only from Wolong National Nature Reserve in central Sichuan Province.

Notes. Ocypus denticulminis sp. nov. can be easily distinguished from congeners by the wide head, the elongate body shape and the large and elongate aedeagus.

The shape of teeth on the mandibles of Ocypus denticulminis sp. nov. shows some interesting variations. Specimens have been seen with both teeth that can be easily distinguished from each other ( Fig. 2-3 A View FIGURE 1 - 2 View FIGURE 2 - 3 ), with both teeth combined to form a knife-shaped structure ( Fig. 2-3 C View FIGURE 1 - 2 View FIGURE 2 - 3 ) and many transitions between these two forms ( Fig. 2- 3 B View FIGURE 1 - 2 View FIGURE 2 - 3 ).

There are two special specimens collected in Wulidun (1 female, Wolong National Nature Reserve, Wulidun, 2395 m, man-made larch forest, pitfall traps, 23–26.V.2004, coll. Xiaodong Yu (IZ-CAS); 1 female, Wolong National Nature Reserve, Wulidun, 2430 m, man-made larch forest, pitfall traps, 22–25.VIII.2004, coll. Xiaodong Yu (IZ-CAS)) ( Fig. 2-3 D View FIGURE 1 - 2 View FIGURE 2 - 3 ). These two specimens are distinctly larger and can be easily distinguished from other specimens of Ocypus denticulminis sp. nov. However, except body size, most characteristics of these two specimens are similar to Ocypus denticulminis sp. nov. Since there are no similar male specimens, it’s hard to tell whether these two specimens merely represent intraspecific variation or another larger species. To be prudent, we didn’t list these two specimens among the paratypes of Ocypus denticulminis sp. nov.

Etymology. The specific epithet, denticulminis , is from Latin words " dentatus " (denticle, to indicate the denticle-like structure of mandibles) and " culmen " (culminis, tip, top).
