The subgenus Pseudocypus Mulsant & Rey, 1876
Mulsant & Rey, 1876: 291 (subgenus of Ocypus ; species included: mus , fuscatus , picipennis , aeneocephalus, confusus, obscuroaeneus, fulvipennis); Tottenham, 1939: 229 (type species designation: mus ); Coiffait, 1956: 186, 198, 207 (subgenus of Ocypus ; species group classification; catalog and key to species); Smetana, 1958: 279, 289 (subgenus of Ocypus ); Coiffait, 1964: 81, 82, 82 (type species: mus ; key to subgenera); Coiffait, 1974: 483 (adult and larval characters; key to species of western Palaearctic region); Shibata, 1984: 93 (subgenus of Ocypus ; checklist of species of Japan); Smetana & Davies, 2000: 21, 31, 43 (subgenus of Ocypus ; checklist of species of north temperate region); Herman, 2001: 3358 (subgenus of Ocypus ; Catalog); Smetana, 2004: 677 (subgenus of Ocypus ; Catalog of Palaearctic Region); Smetana, 2007: 7 (key to Chinese species of O. semenowi lineage ); Smetana, 2009a: 684 (key to Chinese species of O. lewisiuslineage ); Smetana, 2009b: 2 (key to Russian Far East, Chinese, and Japanese species of O. picipennis - and fuscatus - lineages); Schülke & Smetana, 2015: 1090 (subgenus of Ocypus ; Catalog of Palaearctic Region).
Type species: Staphylinus mus Brullé , fixed by subsequent designation by Tottenham, 1939: 229.
Syn.: Atlantogoerius Coiffait, 1956 , Type species: Ocypus sylvaticus Wollaston, 1865 , fixed by original designation.
Fortunocypus Coiffait, 1964 , Type species: Ocypus fortunatarum Wollaston, 1871 View in CoL , fixed by original designation.
The species of the subgenus Pseudocypus Mulsant & Rey, 1876 can be distinguished from those of other subgenera of the genus Ocypus View in CoL by the following characteristics: last segment of maxillary palpi asetose, and that of labial palpi setose; last segment of both maxillary and labial palpi elongate, distinctly fusiform, longer than wide; palpifer with one long subapical and one shorter apical seta; mentum usually with fine, broadly arcuate ridge extending for variable distance from posterior margin between basolateral angles; for other characters see the descriptions and figures below. Species of the subgenus Pseudocypus can be divided into four lineages, namely, the O. fuscatus View in CoL lineage , O. lewisius View in CoL lineage , O. picipennis View in CoL lineage , and O. semenowi View in CoL lineage ( Smetana, 2007, 2009a, 2009b); all these lineages have representatives in China. These lineages and all the Chinese Pseudocypus species are included in the key given below. It was compiled based on Smetana (2007, 2009a, 2009b) and modified to accommodate the new species and new record species from China. With different parts of the existing key in separate papers, it is difficult for Chinese and other taxonomists to identify specimens of Pseudocypus . Therefore we here include a comprehensive version of the key to Chinese Pseudocypus species.
