33. Liriope

[ Liriope ] Meigen, 1800: 14.

CURRENT STATUS: Unavailable name; work suppressed for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]); treated under Ptychoptera Meigen, 1803 [teste Rozkošný (1992: 371)].

[ Lyriope ] Osten Sacken, 1882: 193.

CURRENT STATUS: Unavailable name; criteria to make the name available not fulfilled in this work. REMARKS: Osten Sacken (1882) included this name only in a list of Meigen 1800 names without stating their availability; it is a misspelling of the original Meigen (1800) Liriope .

[ Liriope ] Bezzi, 1907a: 56.

CURRENT STATUS: Unavailable name; criteria to make the name available not fulfilled in this work. REMARKS: Bezzi (1907a) included this name only in a list of Meigen 1800 names without stating their availability.

Liriope Meigen in Hendel, 1908: 46 .

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Tipula contaminata Linnaeus, 1758 ; Tipula albimana Fabricius, 1787 .

TYPE SPECIES: Tipula contaminata Linnaeus, 1758 , by subsequent designation ( Coquillett 1910a: 562).

CURRENT STATUS: Preoccupied by Liriope Lesson, 1837 ; Liriope Rathke, 1843 ; Liriope Gistel, 1848 ; Liriope Gegenbaur, 1856 ; junior synonym of Ptychoptera Meigen, 1803 . New Synonymy.

FAMILY: PTYCHOPTERIDAE .

REMARKS: Liriope was originally proposed by Meigen (1800: 14) without included species and later made unavailable by the suppression of the entire work for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of the I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]). Hendel (1908: 46) was the first after Meigen (1800) to give characters to differentiate the taxon (reproducing Meigen’s characters) and to treat Liriope as valid, which makes the name available from that work with Meigen as author. Hendel (1908) included two nominal species: Tipula contaminata Linnaeus, 1758 and Tipula albimana Fabricius, 1787 . Coquillett (1910a: 562) selected Tipula contaminata Linnaeus, 1758 , which is the type species by subsequent designation. Tipula albimana Fabricius, 1787 is currently treated in Ptychoptera Meigen, 1803 [teste Rozkošný (1992: 371)], which makes Liriope Meigen in Hendel, 1908 a junior synonym of Merodon Meigen, 1803 , n. syn.
