60. Tubifera

[ Tubifera ] Meigen, 1800: 34.

CURRENT STATUS: Unavailable name; work suppressed for the purpose of zoological nomenclature by action of I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]); treated under Eristalis Latreille, 1804 [teste Peck (1988: 184)].

[ Tubifera ] Bezzi, 1907a: 56.

CURRENT STATUS: Unavailable name; criteria to make the name available not fulfilled in this work. REMARKS: Bezzi (1907a) included this name only in a list of Meigen 1800 names without stating their availability.

Tubifera Meigen in Hendel, 1908: 62 .

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Musca tenax Linnaeus, 1758 [as “ S. tenax ... Fab.”], Musca nemorum Linnaeus, 1758 [as “ S. … nemorum ... Fab.”], Musca florea Linnaeus, 1758 [as “ S. … floreus ... Fab.”], Musca pendula Linnaeus, 1758 [as “ S. … pendulus Fab.”].

TYPE SPECIES: Musca tenax Linnaeus, 1758 , by subsequent designation ( Coquillett 1910a: 618).

CURRENT STATUS: Junior synonym of Eristalis Latreille, 1804 . New Synonymy.

FAMILY: SYRPHIDAE .

REMARKS: Tubifera was originally proposed by Meigen (1800: 34) without included species and later made unavailable by the suppression of the entire work for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of the I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]). Hendel (1908: 62) was the first after Meigen (1800) to give characters to differentiate the taxon (reproducing Meigen’s characters) and to treat Tubifera as valid, which makes the name available from that work with Meigen as author. Hendel (1908) included three nominal species: Musca tenax Linnaeus, 1758 [as “ S. tenax ... Fab.”], Musca nemorum Linnaeus, 1758 [as “ S. … nemorum ... Fab.”], Musca florea Linnaeus, 1758 [as “ S. … floreus ... Fab.”], and Musca pendula Linnaeus, 1758 [as “ S. … pendulus Fab.”]. Coquillett (1910a: 617) designated Musca tenax Linnaeus, 1758 , which is the type species by subsequent designation. Musca tenax Linnaeus, 1758 is currently treated in Eristalis Latreille, 1804 [teste Peck (1988: 184)], which makes Tubifera Meigen in Hendel, 1908 a junior synonym of Eristalis Latreille, 1804 , n. syn.
