Taxonomic notes. Tams (1953) examined and designated a single male as the holotype brought from USNM by William Schaus. Due to the communication with Dr. Scott Miller in USNM, he can find two specimens corresponding the original description. Both specimens are taken from the type locality of the cerastes and one of them has identical collecting data as the holotype but without dissection ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 13 ). Tams (1953) illustrated the shape of 8th abdominal sternite of the holotype which shall be examined in one specimen. Dr. Scott Miller ( USNM) kindly investigated both specimens and informed us that one with torn wings ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 13 a) has the 8th sternite partially denuded of scales ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 13 b). It seems to be at an odd angle and covered with a foreign substance. It might have been removed, and then glued back into the specimen. The 8th abdominal sternite of type specimen of A. cerastes from Surigao, N. Mindanao (illustrated in Tams, 1953: 167, fig. 12) and that of presently examined specimens (e.g. from southwest Mindanao, fig. 8), show no remarkable difference. Thus, this specimen is designated here a holotype of the taxon and is supplied with the corresponding red label.
Zolotuhin and Pinratana (2005) first noted the Mindanao population is probably a separated species but no subsequent discussion. The present study agrees their viewpoint and gives evidence through genitalia structures. Sequence divergence for COI between continental A. ferruginea and A. cerastes reach ca 9.1% based on neighbour-joining in the program MEGA 6 ( Tamura et al. 2013) using the K2P model by the junior author, therefore undoubtedly proves they are distinct species.
Diagnosis. See the diagnosis part of A. ferruginea for details.
Distribution. The Philippines (Luzon and Mindanao).
Bionomics. The species is distributed in low elevation broad-leave forest. The adults occasionally occur from April to December.
