Wirth (1974) in the Neotropical catalogue assigns it to the subgenus Drymodesmyia Vargas. This group includes 15 species in Mexico. In their review of the copiosus group, Wirth & Hubert (1960) included all the species in the key were illustrated except for Culicoides wirthomyia Vargas and C. propinquus Macfie.
