Acanthephyra brevirostris Smith, 1885

Acanthephyra brevirostris Smith: 1885 , 504; 1886 (1887): 670, pl. 14, fig. 2, pl. 15, figs. 2, 8, pl. 16, fig. 1, 6; Faxon 1895: 167; Hanamura, 1983: 75; Hendrickx & Estrada–Navarrete, 1989: 113 (list); 1996: 109, fig. 67; Hendrickx, 1993: 318, table 25; Guzmán 2008: 35 (list).

Acanthephyra cf. brevirostris .— Hendrickx, 2013: 444.

Material examined. TALUD IV, St. 26 (24º56’24”N; 109º5’36”W), Aug 26, 2000, 1 M (CL 6.5 mm), BS, 1200– 1274 m (EMU 5531).

TALUD VIII, St. 15 (25º23’6”N; 110º18’24”W), Apr 18, 2005, 1 F (CL 6.0 mm), BS, 2000 m (EMU 8177). TALUD IX, St. 22 (26º3’42”N; 110º20’36”W), Nov 14, 2005, 1 F (CL 15.9 mm), BS, 2214–2309 m (EMU 8255).

Previous distribution in Mexico. Hendrickx & Estrada-Navarrete (1996) cited only two localities for this species: “Dowd Tablemount” (13°28’N; 119°49’W), about 820 nautical miles off the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula, and off Ecuador (01º07’N; 81º04’W) ( Faxon, 1895; Hanamura, 1984).

New records. The "Dowd Tablemount" record is rather far away from the coast of Mexico, but present records within the Gulf of California (from 24º56’24”N to 26º3’42”N) confirm the presence of this species along the Mexican coast.

Remarks. Acanthephyra brevirostris is a fragile species, with a soft carapace, hence it is often damaged during the sampling operation. The capture of several adult specimens in good condition allow us to be confident that the material collected during this survey belongs to A. brevirostris .

General distribution. Gulf of California, Mexico to Ecuador (eastern Pacific); Atlantic Ocean, SW Indian Ocean ( Hanamura, 1983; Chace, 1986).
