Sadoletus validus Distant, 1903: 37 View in CoL (original description); Slater (1964: 777) (catalogue); Ban (2018: 56) (in key).

Sadoletus subpellucidus Ban, 2018: 60 View in CoL View Cited Treatment . New synonym.

Redescription. Following are additions to the original description ( Distant 1903), and description of S. subpellucidus given by Ban (2018).

Abdomen ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 a–d): Median area of tergites I–VI with regular dense punctures; punctures on sternite VII with setae. Sternites I–V fused. Trichobothria on sternites III and IV almost linear.

Male ( Fig. 3a, b View FIGURE 3 ): Inner laterotergites not distinct. Distal margin of tergite VII straight. Posterior margins of sternites III–IV straight, V slightly, VI strongly concaved cephalad. Mid length of sternite VI about one third of sternite VII. Pygophore: median projection with median longitudinal ridge; anterolateral margin of median projection with horn-like outgrowth ( Figs. 1e View FIGURE 1 ; 3e View FIGURE 3 ). Paramere and phallotheca shown in Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 f–i; 3f–j.

Female ( Fig. 3c, d View FIGURE 3 ): Inner laterotergites III–VI present. Anterior margin of tergite VIII with anterolateral apodemes (as Fig. 9k View FIGURE 9 ). Median line of sternites I–V weakly sclerotized. Middle margins of the two halves of sternite VII curved and slightly overlapping ( Fig. 4f View FIGURE 4 ), but looks separate when dissected ( Fig. 3d View FIGURE 3 ). Ovipositor with first and second gonapophysis narrow and elongate. Spermatheca weakly sclerotized; bulb gourd-like, without any rim or flange; duct short, about three times length of bulb.

Distribution. Sri Lanka ( Ceylon), India, Laos ( Distant, 1903; Slater, 1964; Ban, 2018), in this study newly recorded from China (Yunnan, Hainan, Guangxi, Taiwan).

Remarks. The adequate original description and illustrations by Ban (2018) allow doubtless recognition of S. subpellucidus . A careful study of the type specimens of S. validus , dissection of the genitalia of the male paralectotype, and comparison with the illustrations of S. subpellucidus showed they totally matched with each other, hence this synonymy established in the present contribution. S. validus is characterized by a pygophore with median projection with median longitudinal ridge, and anterolateral margin of median projection with horn-like outgrowth.
