Remarks: In order to guarantee stability of Stål’s species und supporting the synonymies here established, a lectotype is selected for B. dorsuaria . Examination of the ♀ holotypes of Bostra lobata Redtenbacher, 1908 in NHMUK and Bacteria monticola Carl, 1913 in MHNG leave no doubt they represent the same variable species (syn. n.). Considerable variability and size ranges are seen in both sexes, with the specimens from Sarapiqui (Province Herédia, Costa Rica) in the first author’s collection are notably shorter than all other examined specimens (body length ♂ 113.0 mm, ♀♀ 160.0–172.0 mm). Males range in colour from dull green over drab and ochre to dark brown. While most specimens bear the characteristic large pair of pointed cephalad horns, the specimen from Sarapiqui (Province Herédia, Costa Rica) in the first author’s collection (coll. FH, No. 1242–3) has these only represented by a pair of conical spines, a specimen from Turrialba (Province Cartago, Costa Rica) in the collection of ANSP only has a pair of blunt swellings on the vertex and the two examples from near Las Mercedes (Province Limón, Costa Rica) in ZMUH have the head entirely unarmed. The most striking variability seen in ♀♀ concerns to the armature of the meso- and metafemora. The holotype of B. monticola Carl, 1913 in MHNG, ♀♀ from Chiriquí, Panama in NHMW and MNCN as well as one of the ♀♀ in the first author’s collection (coll. FH, No. 1242–2; Fig. 68C View FIGURE 68 ) have these completely unarmed, while all other specimens at hand have a large foliaceous sub-basal lobe on both outer ventral carinae, which shows various shapes and sizes. The fact that this lobe is either present or absent in the specimens available from Sarapiqui, shows this variability to be not geographical but to occur within individual local populations. Also the cephalad horns show a great deal of variability in size and shape and the subgenital plate is fairly variable in length, either hardly projecting beyond the anal segment or at the other extreme extending beyond it by more than the combined length of the two terminal abdominal terga.
