Kirk’s Rock Agama

Material. MOUNT SOCONE (base): BMNH 2019.2895, PEM R 23942–43, MHNM: WC-6414. Identification. This species is sympatric with Agama mossambica (below) but can easily be distinguished by a combination of the following characters: head of male orange, throat orange, and dorsum greyish to purple with white, dark-edged blotches ( Fig. 4A ). The closest match on GenBank is Agama kirkii from Mount Namuli in northern Mozambique (99% sequence similarity; JX 668184). Comments. This species is common around villages and buildings at the Chá Socone tea factory. Some individuals were observed running on the granitic slopes of Mount Socone in sympatry with Trachylepis margaritifera .
