ambiguus View in CoL

Lanistes olivaceus var. ambiguus Martens, 1866: 292 View in CoL –293, pl. 71, figs. 3, 4. Type material — lectotype ( Köhler & Glaubrecht 2006: 201, fig. 1c): ZMB 8569a; paralectotypes ZMB 8569b (3 spms.), the shell illustrated by Philippi (1852a: pl. 7, fig. 7). Type locality —“Tette am Sambesi” [Tete on the Zambezi River, Mozambique]. Distribution —no additional information.

Remarks. Martens (1866: 292) referred the illustration of Ampullaria ovum [= Lanistes ovum (Troschel) ] of Philippi (1852a: pl. 7, fig. 7) to this variety; the shell represented by that illustration is also therefore part of the type series (Code, Art. 72.4.1). Original locality given as “Mossambique” by Martens (1866: 293), restricted on designation of the lectotype. Variety of olivacea G.B. Sowerby I , teste Paetel (1887: 480), Kobelt (1909: 79, 1911: 6) and Connolly (1912: 258). Valid species, teste Pilsbry & Bequaert (1927: 194), followed by Köhler & Glaubrecht (2006: 201) and here.

+ assiniensis

Meladomus libycus assiniensis Kobelt, 1912a: 7 View in CoL [1912b: 30, pl. 26, figs. 6, 7]. Type material — syntypes: SMF 7448 (1 spm.), SMF 7449 (1 spm.). Type locality —“Assinie Africae occidentalis View in CoL ” [ Ivory Coast]. Distribution —no additional information.

Remarks. Kobelt (1912a) was published on 15 January, as indicated on p. 48 of the issue (Heft 1, Januar – März), yet cited Kobelt (1912b), which, although dated 24 May 1911, was not considered to have been published until 22 April 1912 ( Welter-Schultes 1999: 198). Pending further dating research, the original description is considered to have been Kobelt (1912a).

bangweolicus

Lanistes (Meladomus) ovum bangweolicus Haas, 1936: 36 , pl. 2, fig. 1. Type material — holotype [by original designation]: SMF 7435; paratypes: MCZ 74725 (2 spms.), NMW.Z.1981.118.00286 (1 spm.), RBINS MT 2040 (1 spm.), SMF 7436 (28 spms.), SMF 7437 (8 spms.), ZSM 20012412 (1 spm., ex SMF). Type locality —“Nordende des Bangweolo-Sees bei Nsombo, Nord-Rhodesien” [North end of Lake Bangweulu near Nsombo, Zambia].

Remarks. While Haas (1936: 37) mentioned only three paratypes, the additional specimens listed above appear also to be paratypes. Synonym of ovum Troschel , teste Mandahl-Barth (1968: 31) and Brown (1980: 52, 1994: 63).
