[Sundamys] maxi (Sody 1932) View in CoL , Natuurh. Maandbl. Maastricht., 21: 157.
Type Locality: Indonesia, Java, Bandung, Cibuni.
Vernacular Names: Javan Sundamys.
Distribution: Known only from W Java, 900-1350 m.
Conservation: IUCN – Endangered.
Discussion: Described as a species of Rattus (Sody, 1932) , later treated as a subspecies of R. infraluteus ( Chasen, 1940) , but shown to be a very distinctive species and member of the suite of endemic Javanese murines ( Musser and Newcomb, 1983; see account of Kadarsanomys sodyi ). Still only represented by specimens collected between 1932 and 1935 by Max Bartels Jr. Phylogenetic relationship may be closer to S. muelleri than to S. infraluteus as judged by morphology. This is the only species of Sundamys known to occur on Java and the only one with a derived cephalic arterial pattern.
