Polypedilum (Tripodura) guato View in CoL sp. n.

( Figure 2 View FIGURE 2 )

Type material. Holotype: male, BRAZIL: Mato Grosso do Sul State, Corumbá, Base de Estudos do Pantanal ( UFMS) – Mata Ciliar (Rio Miranda), 19°34’30”S 57°00’52”W, Malaise trap, 03–18.x.2011, leg.: Lamas, C.J.E. & Nihei, S., SISBIOTA Program ( MZUSP). Paratype: 1 male, same data of holotype ( MZUSP).

Etymology. The name refers to the native ethnic group Guató , who lives in Corumbá, type locality of the species. It is to be treated as a noun in apposition.

Diagnostic characters. The species can be separated from other Polypedilum species by combination of broad anal point, shoulders on each side of anal point, distal half of wing membrane with macrotrichia, distal half of superior volsella without microtrichia and apex of all femora and foretibia dark pigmented.

Description. Male (n = 1–2). Total length 1.68–1.77 mm. Wing length 1.08–1.10 mm. Total length/wing length 1.5–1.6. Wing length/length of profemur 1.9–2.1.

Coloration. Head light brown. Thorax dark brown; halteres light brown; wing with macula, two dark markings in cell r4+5, one in m1+2, one in m3+4 and cu, one in m, and one in an. Foreleg: femur with 1/4 proximal and 2/4 apical dark brown, tibia ¾ apical dark brown and tarsomeres not observed. Midleg and hind leg: femur with 2/4 proximal and ¼ apical dark brown, tibia ¾ apical dark brown and tarsomeres dark brown. Abdominal segments brown.

Head. Eyes bare, frontal tubercles absent. AR 0.68–0.85; ultimate flagellomere 292–332 Μm long. Temporal setae 5. Clypeus with 15–16 setae. Tentorium 86 Μm long, 17 Μm wide. Palpomere lengths (in Μm): 26–41; 28–33; 32–63; 62–64; 79–123. Third palpal segment with 2–3 sensilla clavata, longest 17 Μm.

Wing ( Figure 2 View FIGURE 2 A). Anal lobe weak. VR 0.77–0.80. Brachiolum with 3 setae. R with 11–13 setae; R1 with 8–12 setae; R4+5 with 17–28 setae; M1+2 with 23–28 setae; Cu1 with 9 setae. Cells r4+5 with 76–77, m1+2 with 40–41, m3+4 with 22–30 and cu plus an with 3–5 macrotrichia, remaining cells bare. Squama with 5 setae.

Thorax. Scutum without tubercle. Dorsocentrals 6–7; acrostichals 14; prealars 4. Scutellum with 7 setae.

Legs. Scale of foretibia 16–29 Μm long, triangular and without spur. Spur of midtibia 44–49 Μm long, including 21–23 Μm long comb. Spur of hind tibia 49 Μm long, including 23 Μm long comb. Width at apex of foretibia 28–31 Μm, of midtibia 33–40 Μm, of hind tibia 37–38 Μm. Lengths (in Μm) and proportions of legs as in Table 2 View TABLE 2 .

Hypopygium ( Figure 2 View FIGURE 2 B–C). Tergite IX with 5 median setae. Anal tergite band well developed. Laterosternite with 2 setae. Anal point 28–30 Μm long, crested. Phallapodeme 44–45 Μm long, transverse sternapodeme 41–42 Μm long. Gonocoxite 83–103 Μm long. Total length of superior volsella including apical projection 37–41 Μm long, lateral seta 12 Μm long; apical projection 15 Μm long, bare. Inferior volsella slender 73–88 Μm long, with 1 strong apical seta projecting caudad, and 4 orally directed setae. Gonostylus 103–106 Μm long. HR 0.78–1.00; HV 1.59– 1.73.

Female and immatures. Unknown.

Remarks. The male imago of Polypedilum (Tr.) guato sp. n. were collected in a Malaise trap installed on the borders of the Miranda River, tributary of the Paraguay River, in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil.

The new species is placed in subgenus Tripodura Townes based on the combination of wing with dark markings, broad anal point and shoulders at each side of it. Wing membrane with setae is present only in three species of the subgenus, namely P. (Tr.) kijabense Freeman, 1958 , which is Afrotropical and has trifid anal point; in P. (Tr.) guarani Bidawid-Kafka, 1996 and P. (Tr.) chiriguano Bidawid-Kafka, 1996 , both Neotropical, the same type of superior volsella, i. e., slender and posteriorly directed, shoulders at the base of anal point are present. P. guato sp. n. and P. chiriguano share the same wing pattern of macula and macrotrichia, and are easily distinguished by the coloration of apex of femora and foretibia, which is dark in P. guato sp. n. and pale in P. chiriguano and microtrichia on distal half of superior volsella, absent in P. guato sp. n. and present in P. chiriguano .

Distribution. The species is known from Mato Grosso do Sul State, Southwestern Brazil.
