Genus Temeritas Richards, 1963 in Delamare Deboutteville & Massoud, 1963

Diagnosis of the genus. Specimens pigmented, usually with very clear color patterns. Clypeal and interantennal areas of head plus large abdomen usually with simple slender chaetae, rarely with some spines in dorso-anterior large abdomen; head frontal area with up to five pairs of spine-like chaetae, clypeal and interantennal areas of head with or without distinct pairs of long chaetae. Head and mesothorax lacking vesicular organs. Antennae longer or subequal to body length, sometimes whip like. Ant IV longer than Ant I, II and III together, with 18 to 46 subsegments. Ant III apical organ sensory rods apart, in independently shallow invaginations. Ant III and II with or without clearly longer sets of chaetae. Trochanter III with five normal chaetae plus one posterior spine. Tibiotarsi I – III only with normal smooth or slightly serrated chaetae, oval organs present or absent, capitate tenant-hairs absent, anterior and posterior pretarsal chaetae present. Ungues lanceolate without cavity, mostly without tunica, unguiculi with apical filament. Bothriotricha A – D present, A – C misaligned. Neosminthuroid chaetae absent on parafurcal area (furca basis), males with or without sets of plumose chaetae on this region. Dens with 13 ventral chaetae, following the formula 1:1:2:2:2:2:3. Mucro slender, with narrow or truncate apex, with serrate edges (apparently smooth in T. kilimandjarica ( Wahlgren, 1908)) . Mucronal chaeta present or absent (adapted from Delamare Deboutteville & Massoud 1963; Richards 1968; Arlé & Oliveira 1977; Betsch 1980, 2000; Bretfeld 1999).
