Type species: Karenia ravida Distant, 1888 .

Diagnosis: Head (including eyes) narrower than base of mesonotum, dorsally with median black mark enclosing ocelli; pronotum including pronotal collar distinctly wider than head, anterolateral margin of pronotal collar with a small but distinct tooth, pronotum with pair of central fasciae, connected near pronotal collar; mesonotum slightly narrower than pronotal collar, mesonotum with six black fasciae; pair of submedian sigilla, pair of lateral sigilla, and pair of spots in front of anterior angles of cruciform elevation; cruciform elevation elongate; postclypeus fairly strongly produced; rostrum extending slightly beyond posterior trochanter; fore wing and hind wing hyaline; fore wing with infuscations on r, r-m, m, m-cu, and CuA2, also distinctly or slightly spotted on apices of RA2, RP, M1, M2, M3, M4, and CuA1; timbal organs absent; male opercula widely separated, a bit elongated, reaching to half length or two thirds of abdominal sternite III; anterior femora usually with two distinct spines and very small distal spine; lateral pygofer lobe broadly rounded apically; basal part of uncus large and distinctly expanded laterally; apical part of uncus lobe with lateral spine ( Pham & Yang, 2012).

Distribution: northern Vietnam, China; Burma.
