Figs 3 View FIGURES 1–6 , 90–92 View FIGURES 90–98 , 176, 176a View FIGURES 175–183
Ecnomina legula Neboiss, 1977: 58 View in CoL , figs 261–268. — Neboiss 1986: 152. — Neboiss 2003: 64, figs 16 A, B.
Diagnosis. Ecnomina legula closely resembles E. spinosa and E. gullea with relatively long mesally directed digitiform projections on the inferior appendages, and superior appendages with apices narrowly separated, but is separated by superior appendages in lateral view length about twice width, about three robust ventrally directed bristles or spines on lateral processes of segment IX and relatively robust inferior appendages, in lateral view.
Description. (Revised after Neboiss 1977). Head, body and wings brownish; wings ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–6 ) similar to E. spinosa . Forewing length about 2.8–3.1 times width: male 5.4–6.0 mm, female 5.5–6.3. Forewing fork 2 relatively long, sessile, length about 1.1–1.2 times length of fork 3; fork 3 relatively long, sessile or with short footstalk, length fork greater than 5.3 times length footstalk, footstalk length about 0–1.1 times length crossvein m, r-m and m not contiguous at fork 3 by about 0.5–1.3 times length cross-vein m; fork 4 shorter than fork 3; fork 5 long, length about 1.8 times length of fork 4. Hindwing length about 3 times width, fork 2 sessile, length about 1.3–1.6 times length of fork 3.
Male. Segment IX with a pair of long lateral processes with one relatively long and two shorter ventrally directed bristles or spines ( Fig. 90 View FIGURES 90–98 ). Tergum X membranous ( Fig. 92 View FIGURES 90–98 ). Superior appendages in lateral view, length about twice width, tapered slightly distally ( Fig. 90 View FIGURES 90–98 ); in dorsal view, broad basally, relatively slender in distal half, apices narrowly separated ( Fig. 92 View FIGURES 90–98 ); with a group of stout spines baso-ventral to base of superior appendages. Phallus generally tube-like, dorso-ventrally flattened ( Fig. 90 View FIGURES 90–98 ). Inferior appendages in ventral view, fused basally, narrowly separated in distal half, with long meso-distally pointed apices ( Fig. 91 View FIGURES 90–98 ); in lateral view, short, robust, length about same as width ( Fig. 90 View FIGURES 90–98 ).
Female. Genitalia with a single elongate and relatively robust or bladelike mesal process on sternite VIII; segment IX relatively long, tapered slightly distally, segment X relatively short and segments IX and X relatively slender ( Figs 176, 176a View FIGURES 175–183 ).
Material examined: Tasmania. Holotype male, Huon River crossing, Port Davey Track, 9 Feb 1965, A.N. (NMV, T- 4887). Paratypes, male (specimen PT-443 figured), female (specimen PT-267 figured), collected with holotype (NMV). Other Tasmanian records refer to Neboiss (1977, 2003).
Remarks. Ecnomina legula has been collected from eight localities and so is relatively common and widespread throughout eastern Tasmania (latitudinal range 41°16' - 43°06'S). Neboiss’s (1977) figures have been redrawn to allow direct comparisons and to accompany the description that is revised in light of new interpretations of Ecnomina genitalic and wing structures.
