Ecnomina viatica Neboiss View in CoL
Figs 99–101 View FIGURES 99–107 , 179 View FIGURES 175–183
Ecnomina viatica Neboiss, 1982: 293 View in CoL , figs 32–34, 42, 43, 48. — Neboiss 1986: 153.
Diagnosis. Ecnomina viatica is distinguished by the dorso-lateral looped flange associated with the phallus.
Description. (Revised after Neboiss 1982). Head, body and wings light brown, abdomen paler ventrally; wings (fig. 48, Neboiss 1982) similar to E. legula ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–6 ). Forewing length about 2.9–3.3 times width: male 3.2–3.6 mm, female 3.2–3.8 mm. Forewing fork 2 relatively long, sessile, length about 1.1–1.2 times length of fork 3; fork 3 relatively long, sessile or with short footstalk, length fork greater than 10 times length footstalk, footstalk length about 0–0.6 times length cross-vein m, r-m and m not contiguous at fork 3 by about 0.3 times length cross-vein m; fork 4 shorter than fork 3; fork 5 length about 1.3 times length of fork 4. Hindwing length about 3.3–3.6 times width, fork 2 sessile, length about 1.2–1.3 times length of fork 3.
Male. Tergum X membranous, with pair of processes, hooked distally ( Fig. 101 View FIGURES 99–107 ). Superior appendages in lateral view, sub triangular, length about 2.5 times width, tapered in distal half, with a group of three stout spines baso-ventral to base of superior appendages ( Fig. 99 View FIGURES 99–107 ); in dorsal view, relatively robust, length about 2.5 times width, apices converging ( Fig. 101 View FIGURES 99–107 ). Phallus generally tube-like with associated distinctive dorso-lateral looped flange; with a single, small, down curved process (phallic guide) arising from near the base of the inferior appendages ( Fig. 99 View FIGURES 99–107 ). Inferior appendages in ventral view, fused, sub-rectangular, with pair of rounded disto-lateral lobes ( Fig. 100 View FIGURES 99–107 ); in lateral view, broad basally, tapered slightly distally ( Fig. 99 View FIGURES 99–107 ).
Female. Genitalia with a single relatively elongate and robust mesal process on sternite VIII, process with a rounded apex; segment IX relatively long, tapered slightly distally, segment X relatively short and segments IX and X relatively slender and with several pairs of hairs ( Fig. 179 View FIGURES 175–183 ).
Material examined: Western Australia. Holotype male, Margaret River, Rapids crossing, 25 km S of Busselton, 22 Nov 1978, A.N. ( NMV, T- 6363). Paratypes, 19 males (specimen PT-629 figured), 25 females (specimen PT-725 figured), collected with holotype ( NMV) . Other material. 50 males, 30 females, 24 km NW of Walpole , 15 Nov 1958, E. F. Riek ( ANIC) .
Remarks. Ecnomina viatica is recorded from two sites from south-western Australia (latitudinal range 33°58'S- 34°57'S). Neboiss’s (1982) figures have been redrawn to allow direct comparisons and to accompany the description that is revised in light of new interpretations of Ecnomina genitalic and wing structures.
