Ecnomina vega Neboiss View in CoL

Figs 78–80 View FIGURES 75–83 , 175 View FIGURES 175–183

Ecnomina vega Neboiss, 1977: 58 View in CoL , figs 269–271. — Neboiss 1986: 152.

Diagnosis. Ecnomina vega closely resembles the other five species in this group, but it is distinguished by inferior appendages without a digitiform projection distally and lateral processes of segment IX with relatively short spines apically.

Description. Head, body and wings brownish, abdomen paler ventrally; wings similar to E. legula ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–6 ). Forewing length about 3.1 times width: male 4.7–5.5 mm, female 4.8 mm. Forewing fork 2 relatively long, sessile, length about 1.2–1.3 times length of fork 3; fork 3 relatively long, sessile or with short footstalk, length fork greater than 8 times length footstalk, footstalk length about 0–0.7 times length cross-vein m, r-m and m not contiguous at fork 3 by about 0.9–1.2 times length cross-vein m; fork 4 present, shorter than fork 3; fork 5 long, length about 1.8 times length of fork 4. Hindwing length about 3.2 times width, fork 2 sessile, length about 1.2–1.4 times length of fork 3.

Male. (Revised after Neboiss 1977). Segment IX with a pair of long lateral processes with about seven ventrally directed, relatively short bristles or spines ( Fig. 78 View FIGURES 75–83 ). Tergum X membranous with pair of sclerotised mesal lobes, partly divided by a mesal split, each with a robust spine dorsally ( Fig. 80 View FIGURES 75–83 ). Superior appendages in lateral view, dilated slightly near middle, length about 3 times width with a downward directed elongate, slender process arising near the base ( Fig. 78 View FIGURES 75–83 ); in dorsal view, broad in basal half, relatively slender in distal half, apices narrowly separated ( Fig. 80 View FIGURES 75–83 ); with a few stout spines baso-ventral to base of superior appendages. Phallus generally tube-like, slender, slightly dilated distally ( Fig. 78 View FIGURES 75–83 ). Inferior appendages slightly dorso-ventrally flattened; in ventral view, paired and discrete ovoid shaped lobes, narrowly separated, length about twice width ( Fig. 79 View FIGURES 75–83 ); in lateral view, sub rectangular, length about 3 times width ( Fig. 78 View FIGURES 75–83 ).

Female. Genitalia with a single elongate and relatively robust or bladelike mesal process on sternite VIII; segment IX relatively long, tapered slightly distally, segment X relatively short and segments IX and X relatively slender ( Fig. 175 View FIGURES 175–183 ).

Material examined: Tasmania, Holotype male, Macquarie River , 8 km W Campbell Town, 9 Nov 1972 , A.N. ( NMV, T- 4900, specimen PT-267 figured). Other material. Victoria. 2 males, 1 female (specimen CT- 506 figured), Towong , 29 Jan 1957 , A.N.

Remarks. Ecnomina vega appears to have a disjunct distribution and probably is relatively rare, as only one specimen has been collected from the type locality in Tasmania and a further two males and one female from a site in north-eastern Victoria (latitudinal range 36°28'- 41°56'S). Neboiss’s (1977) figures have been redrawn to allow direct comparisons and to accompany the description that is revised in light of new interpretations of Ecnomina genitalic and wing structures.
