Figs 75–77 View FIGURES 75–83 , 174 View FIGURES 168–174
Ecnomina batyle Neboiss, 1977: 59 View in CoL , figs 272–276. – Neboiss 1986:153.
Diagnosis. Ecnomina batyle is a very distinctive species because it is the only species of Ecnomina which lacks inferior appendages but has a distinctive slender, bifid process (phallic guide) arising ventrally from near the base of the phallus.
Description. (Revised after Neboiss 1977). Head, body and wings brownish, abdomen paler ventrally; wings similar to E. legula ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–6 ). Forewing length about 3.0–3.2 times width: male 3.4–4.7 mm, female 4.0– 4.6 mm. Forewing fork 2 relatively long, sessile, length about 1.2–1.4 times length of fork 3; fork 3 relatively long, with short footstalk, length fork greater than 3.5 times length footstalk, footstalk length about 0.3–1.4 times length cross-vein m, r-m and m not contiguous at fork 3 by about 0.3–1.0 times length cross-vein m; fork 4 present, similar length to fork 3; fork 5 long, length about 1.8 times length of fork 4. Hindwing length about 3 times width, fork 2 sessile, length about 1.4–1.6 times length of fork 3.
Male. Tergum X membranous, sclerotised mesal process of tergum X short ( Fig. 77 View FIGURES 75–83 ). Superior appendages in lateral view, sub rectangular, length about 3 times width ( Fig. 75 View FIGURES 75–83 ); in dorsal view, length about 3 times width, expanded slightly meso-distally ( Fig. 77 View FIGURES 75–83 ). Phallus generally tube-like, dilated and upturned distally; with a slender, bifid process (phallic guide) arising ventrally from near the base of the phallus. Inferior appendages absent ( Figs 75, 76 View FIGURES 75–83 ).
Female. Genitalia with a single elongate and relatively slender mesal process on sternite VIII; segment IX relatively long, tapered slightly distally, segment X relatively short and segments IX and X relatively slender, with a few pairs of hairs on segment X ( Fig. 174 View FIGURES 168–174 ).

Ecnomina batyle is relatively common and widespread species throughout Tasmania, Victoria and eastern New South Wales (latitudinal range 31°15' - 43°38'S). Neboiss’s (1977) figures have been redrawn to allow direct comparisons and to accompany the description that is revised in light of new interpretations of Ecnomina genitalic and wing structures.
