Remarks. The species was resurrected from being a junior synonym of Nyssomyia intermedia (Lutz & Neiva)

by Marcondes (1996), and later Andrade Filho et al. (2003) redescribed the species in more detail. Genus characters includes maxillary lacinia with two rows of external teeth ( Figure 2C View FIGURE 2 ), absence of Newstead scales on second palp segment, third one shorter than 4th+5th ( Figure 2B View FIGURE 2 ), and cibarium with several rows of verticalised anterior teeth ( Figure 2E View FIGURE 2 ). The individuals were identified as Ny. neivai based on the length of the common sperm duct, and the spermathecae presenting their maximum width in the central annulations. This species has been incriminated in the transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis in neighbouring countries Brazil and Argentina ( Rangel & Lainson 2009; Quintana et al. 2013) as well as caught naturally infected with Leishmania (Viannia) parasites in Salta and Tucumán, Argentina ( Córdoba-Lanús et al. 2006). Ny. neivai has also been found naturally infected with L. infantum in Brazil ( Saraiva et al. 2009; Thomaz-Soccol et al. 2018).
