Barcinus productus Kormilev 1971:130 (rec. Bismarck Archipelago)

Barcinus productus Kormilev & Froeschner 1987:112 (cat.)

Usinger & Matsuda described this taxon based on the male holotype from New Ireland ( Bismarck Archipelago E of New Guinea). The holotype is deposited in the Natural History Museum London .

Material examined: 1♂ pinned:” New Britain/ Gazelle Pen., Gaulin / 140m, 19–20 XI 1962 ”// ” J.Sedlacek / collector/ Bishop” ; 1♂ pinned:” New Britain/ Gazelle pen., Upper / Warangoi, Riat, 250m / 1 XI 1962 ”//” J.Sedlacek / collector/ Bishop” ; 1♂ card mounted:” New Britain / Gazelle Pen. , Upper / Warangoi, 350– 600m / 28–29 XI 1962 ”//” J.Sedlacek / collector/ Bishop”. This specimen was dissected for the study of genitalic structures. All these specimens were erroneously labelled by Kormilev 1968 as “ truncatus ” ( CEHI exchange specimens from Bishop Museum) ; 1♂ pinned:” New Guinea / Papua / Madang / VII 1969 / leg. B.Heinrich ” ( CEHI) .

As the holotype and the abovementioned examined specimens originated from Bismarck Archipelago it was doubtful that P.productus occurs also in NE Papua New Guinea as indicated by Kormilev (1971). However the specimen from Madang shows no differences from those from New Britain and is therefore regarded as conspecific.

The pygophore of the male is dorsally conically produced posteriorly, projecting over the shorter rounded lower portion (fig.30).

Usinger & Matsuda 1959:282 state: “This new species ( productus ) closely resembles Barcinus truncatus Kormilev , but the lateral lobes of the seventh abdominal segment are much more developed and extend beyond the apices of the following segments and the preceding segments.” P. productus differs further from truncatus by the feebly produced rounded pe-angles of deltg IV and V of males which are acute in truncatus .

Measurements: Males from Gaulin and Warangoi: Length 12.6, 11.8 mm; head length/width 27/15, 25/ 14.5; pronotum w/l 40/18, 41/18; scutellum w/l 22/15, 22/16; length of antennal segments I/II/III/IV = 17/9/ 15/8, 17/9/14.5/8; ratio length of antennae / width of head 3.27 (46.5/17.5), 3.34 (48.5/14.5); width of abdomen across tergite III 54,VI 57, VII 29.5, III 55,VI 61, VII 30. Another male from Gazelle Peninsula is 13.7 mm long.

Distribution: Few records from Bismarck Archipelago (New Britain, New Ireland) and from a single locality in NE Papua New Guinea are so far known. Map 2.
