( Figs. 1–2 View FIGURE 1 View FIGURE 2 )

Kloosia koreana Reiss, 1988: 36 View in CoL .

Material examined. JAPAN: Gifu Prefecture, Nagara River, 34 km from mouth, 1 male, 28.v.2002, S. Kasuya ( CHI 31:28); Gifu Prefecture, Nagara River, 10 km from mouth, 1 male, 31.v.1999, S. Kasuya ( CHI 36:58); Gifu Prefecture, Nagara River, 30 km from mouth, 1 male, 22.v.1998, S. Kasuya ( CHI 36:59); Gifu Prefecture, Nagara River, Nagara Ohashi, 1 male, 3.x.2001, T. Kobayashi ( CHI 36:60); Niigata Prefecture, Nagaoka City, Teradomari, 12 larvae, 11.ii.2004, I. Murakami ( CHI 36:09-20); Okinawa Prefecture, Ishigaki Island, Miyara River, 2 larvae, 1–23.xii.2002, N. Kitagawa (as Beckidia sp. BA = Chironomidae Genus CD-1 and CD-2; Kitagawa’s code: 9270 and 9100, respectively).

Male (n = 3–4) [Measurements in Reiss (1988) in brackets].

Head ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 A). Frontal tubercle absent. Antenna with 11 flagellomeres; AR 1.21–1.33 [1.25–1.34].

Thorax. Acrostichals 2–3 [3–4]; dorsocentrals 5–9, 7 [6]; prealars 2–4, 3 [3]. Scutellum with 4–6 [4] setae.

Wing ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B). Length 1.12–1.40, 1.24 [1.10–1.20] mm; bare, with weak anal lobe. Squama bare.

Legs Fore tibial scale and mid- and hind tibial combs as in Figures 1 View FIGURE 1 C–E. Pulvilli present. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 1 View TABLE 1 .

Hypopygium ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 F). Anal tergite with 4–6 median setae at base of anal point, anal tergite band Yshaped. Superior and inferior volsella almost of equal length. Superior volsella bare, with narrow base and broader apex, bearing 2 medial to distomedial long setae. Inferior volsella narrow, almost straight, without long apical setae.

Larva

Head. Antenna ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 D) 6 segmented, basal segment as long as 2nd and 3rd segment combined, blade arising subapically on 2nd segment, extending to base of 5th segment. Pecten epipharyngis a triangular plate, with c. 10 spines. SI seta-like; SII moderately long and broad ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B). Mandible ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A) with pecten mandibularis and seta interna. Premandible ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 C) with 3 apical teeth, without brush. Mentum ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 E) with 6 pairs of lateral teeth; and small, rounded, ventromental plate with smooth anterior margin. Body. Segments subdivided; anterior parapods with large, long claws; anal setae short.

Remarks. According to Reiss (1988), K. koreana differs from the other species of the genus by features of the hypopygium, having superior and inferior volsella subequal in length, anal point clearly shorter than the volsellae, and superior volsella with two long median setae separated by a distance of 1/3 to 1/4 the length of the volsella. In the other Kloosia species, the inferior volsella is clearly longer than the superior volsella, the two long median setae are situated more closely together, and at least one of them is placed apically.

The males examined are consistent with the description of K. koreana given by Reiss (1988) and also the larvae examined conform to the larval descriptions of K. koreana in Epler (2001) and WBD (World Biodiversity Database.

Kitagawa (2003) recorded a larva from sandy substratum in Miyara River, Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, as Beckidia sp. BA. Subsequently, Kitagawa (2005) replaced its name with Chironominae Genus CD-1 and also recorded Chironominae Genus CD- 2 in the same report. Re-examination of these two specimens showed that they do not belong in Beckidia Saether , but in Kloosia . The evidences are as follows: [Characteristics of Beckidia according to Pinder and Reiss (1983) in brackets]. 1) Seta interna present [absent]; 2) Ventromental plate coarsely striated semilunar/rounded, shorter than mentum, with smooth anterior margin [coarsely striated with crenated anterior margin]; 3) Antenna with 6 segments [7 segments]; 4) Premandible with 3 apical teeth and one basal tooth [5 apical teeth]; 5) Mentum with 6 lateral teeth [5 lateral teeth]; 6) Seta subdentalis short, reaching only to basal tooth [long, slender, reaching nearly to apical teeth].
