Recognition. This species can be distinguished by the shiny area on the anepisternum and katepisternum and male terminalia with long apical section of the phallus, phallic guide with spine-like microtrichia and surstylus directed posterodorsally.

Description. Wing length 2.8–3.3 mm. Male ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 11–14 ). Head black in ground-colour, with brown to black setation, occiput finely greyish pollinose. Eyes holoptic; upper ommatidia somewhat enlarged, border between larger and smaller ommatidia indistinct. Frons represented by small triangular space just above antennae, bare, greyish pollinose. Ocellar triangle prominent, with 2 pairs of moderately long bristly hairs. Postvertical and postocular setae moderately long, thin; occiput covered with numerous similar bristly hairs in lower part.Antenna black; scape short, subequal to globular pedicel, both with short setulae; postpedicel rather narrow, nearly 3.5 times longer than wide, smoothly tapered; stylus very short, sensillum-tipped; segment 9 tubular, nearly as long as wide, apical sensillum about as long as segment 9. Proboscis moderately long, projected obliquely; labium somewhat shorter than head is high; palpus projected parallel to labrum, somewhat shorter than labrum.

Thorax black in ground-colour, with brown to black setation; scutum viewed dorsally or anteriorly matt, entirely brown pollinose (in specimens dried from alcohol scutum often greyish brown, with indistinct darker vittae down acrostichal and dorsocentral setae); anepisternum and katepisternum with shiny spot in middle, otherwise mesopleuron finely greyish pollinose. Proepisternum with few setulae. Postpronotal lobe with 1 moderately long and 1–2 short setae. Mesonotal setae prominent; acr short, biserial, lacking on prescutellar depression, distance between rows much shorter than length of acr; dc uniserial, offset from row anteriorly, mostly subequal to acr, 2–3 prescutellar pairs longer; 0 ph, 1 presut spal, 3 npl (with 1 additional shorter seta), 1 short psut spal, 1 pal and 4–5 pairs of sctl; usually, some additional setulae present on supra-alar face.

Legs, including coxae, largely rather dusky yellow; hind femur, hind tibia and all tarsi somewhat darker. Coxae and trochanters with ordinary hair-like setae. Fore femur with several posteroventral subapical short bristly hairs. All tibia without prominent posterodorsal setae (except subapicals). Mid femur with several subapical, short, spinelike posteroventral setae. Hind femur with rows of moderately long anteroventral (shorter basally), anterodorsal and posterodorsal bristly hairs along whole length. Tarsomere 1 of mid and hindlegs with pair of rows of stiff ventral setae; tarsomere 5 on all legs not flattened; pulvilli broad, shorter than tarsal claw.

Wing distinctly uniformly brownish infuscate; basal costal seta absent; pterostigma distinct brownish, elliptical, overlapping apex of vein R 1; anal lobe very prominent, acute. Sc complete; R 2+3 straight in apical part to slightly curved beneath pterostigma; R 4+5 unbranched; cell dm broad, longer than basal cells, hardly produced apically, almost truncate; base of M 2 (crossvein) nearly one-fourth length of dm-m, M branches widely separated; dm-cu crossvein straight. Apex of cell cua recurved, CuA+CuP long, ending just short of wing margin. Halter brown (in specimens taken from alcohol materials stem often somewhat paler).

Abdomen largely brownish, subshiny, brownish pollinose, covered with moderately long, dark bristly hairs; sternites 1–3 paler, rather brownish yellow. Terminalia ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 29–32 ) dark brown, moderately large. Hypandrium with several long setae, rounded, somewhat upcurved apically, with posterior projection, apex rounded and recurved; gonocoxal apodeme broad and long; inner apodeme rounded and flattened, one-half length of gonocoxal apodeme; postgonite short, broad at base, arched, produced into pair of slender, oblique processes. Phallic guide extended beyond epandrium, parallel with phallus and bent nearly at right angles subapically; bent apical section paired with jagged or toothed surface apically and numerous, long spine-like projections; apex tapered. Epandrium not inflated laterally; dorsal bridge narrowed medially; produced distally into posterodorsally projecting surstylus; apex of surstylus with short, tooth-like projection medially. Phallus slender, arched beyond epandrium, bent nearly at right angle subapically; apical section elongate, sinuous, with hooped tip; ejaculatory apodeme plate-like, rounded, subequal in length to gonocoxal apodeme. Cercus long, narrow, two-thirds length of epandrium; apex broadly rounded, extended free from epandrium; hypoproct produced into pair of very long, slender processes, just short of apex of cercus, projecting beyond epandrium.

Female. Similar to male, except as follows: Eyes dichoptic; ommatidia equally small. Frons very broad, widened toward ocellar tubercle, shiny, with marginal setulae. Scutum viewed dorsally rather subshiny, finely brownish grey pollinose, with 3 indistinct narrow brown vittae down acrostichal and dorsocentral setae. Legs, including coxae, largely yellow; hind femur (except extreme base), hind tibia (except extreme base) and tarsus of all legs brown (hind femur sometimes paler, especially in specimens dried from alcohol). Mid femur with shorter and thinner posteroventral subapical setae. Abdomen paler (except apical segments), with shorter setation. Cercus elongate, slender, brownish, covered with short setulae.

Distribution. Palaearctic: Czech Republic, Germany, Russia (Adygea, Karachay-Cherkessia, Krasnodarskiy Territory), Slovakia. This species is known from the mountains of Central Europe and from the Caucasus ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 33–35 ).

Etymology. This species is named after our colleague, Miroslav Barták (Prague, Czech Republic), who has collected many valuable and interesting empidoid specimens.
