Description. Shell medium-sized, slender, comprising up to 20 teleoconch whorls. Protoconch moderately high, consisting of less than two strongly convex whorls with bulbous initial part; diameter 290 μm. Transition into teleoconch marked by onset of keel-like B spiral cord and slightly weaker C spiral cord. Both primary spiral cords persist throughout ontogeny forming two moderately raised cords with convex tops, separated by flat to weakly concave interspace. Sutural ramp indistinct, flat to feebly convex on late whorls. Weakly raised A spiral cord may develop on sutural ramp, typically accompanied adapically by two secondary spiral cords and one abapical one. Weaker tertiary spiral cords may appear in interspaces. Three tertiary spiral cords below C primary cord. Suture moderately to distinctly incised; whorl profile shifting from weakly convex to moderately frustate during ontogeny. Lateral sinus with moderately steep angle, ranging around 18.5°; moderately deep with weak adapical inflection point; occasionally, weak abapical inflection point appears close to suture; abapical LS p. Basal sinus weakly opisthocyrt to slightly sigmoidal. Aperture semicircular; columella concave; parietal callus glossy, thin, weakly expanding. Base moderately convex with about five to eight wide-spaced spiral cords and intercalated secondary cords of variable strength. Inner lirae present on late teleoconch whorls, consisting of eight distinct palatal lirae and one prominent basal cord in abaxial half accompanied by 3–4 weaker spiral cords.
Shell measurements and ratios. All specimens are incomplete; the SL/MD ratio of rather complete specimens ranges around 4.0. Based on this ratio, the largest fragments containing the last whorl suggest a maximum SL of 68 to78 mm and a maximum diameter of 16.9 to 19.6 mm. AA (n=12): 19.7° (σ = 3.2°), PA: 12.6° (σ = 0.9°). Lateral sinus (n = 8): LS angle = 18.5° (σ = 3.0°), LS p = 1.1 (σ = 0.1), LS d = 5.4 (σ = 1.1).
Discussion. The species displays moderate variability concerning the strength of the two primary spiral cords but develops a broad range of morphotypes with variable strength and number of secondary and tertiary spiral cords. In some specimens, these spirals attain about the same strength, forming a regular sculpture and even the primary cords may bear distinct secondary cords. Especially the presence and strength of the A spiral cord is highly variable ranging from nearly absent to prominent, sometimes resulting in a ‘tricarinate’ profile of late teleoconch whorls. This variability is reflected in a large number of names that have been used in the Paratethyan literature. In our opinion, however, none of these names can be used for this species. Most authors have misidentified this species as Archimediella pythagoraica ( Hilber, 1882) [= A. indigena ( Eichwald, 1830) ]. Archimediella indigena differs in its smaller size, the less defined sutural ramp, and the less prominent primary cords (of which the C spiral cord may form an abapical angulation). Judging from the short diagnosis, Handmann (1882) seems to have been the first who recognized this species as distinct taxon and proposed Turritella (Oligodia) Archimedis Brong. var. tricarinata as its name. Turritella tricarinata , however, was already preoccupied by taxa described by Brocchi (1814) and King (1832). Later, Friedberg (1909) recognized the species again and identified it as Turritella dertonensis Mayer, 1868 and T. dertonensis subconica Sacco, 1895 . These identifications were uncritically adopted by many subsequent authors (e.g. Bałuk 1975; Švagrovský 1982; Schultz 1998). Archimediella dertonensis was described by Mayer (1868: 106, pl. 2, fig. 6) from the Tortonian of Stazzano and Sassuolo in northern Italy. Archimediella dertonensis and the variety subconica Sacco, 1895 differ from A. carpathica in their smaller size, the strongly reduced second- ary sculpture and the prominent B spiral cord (see syntype of A. dertonensis , Fig. 12 C View FIGURE 12 : BS.061.03.004, SL: 27.0 mm, MD: 9.0 mm, Stazzano ( Italy), illustrated in Sacco (1895, pl. 1, fig. 39). Archimediella persulcata Sacco, 1895 (introduced as variety of dertonensis ) has little in common with the Paratethyan species and differs also from A. dertonensis in the close-set B and C spiral cords in the abapical half of the whorl and the very prominent, regular secondary spiral cords (see Caprotti 1975, 2011). Archimediella miotaurina Sacco 1895 , from the lower Miocene of the Torino hills, differs from A. carpathica in the keel-like B spiral cord and the much weaker C spiral cord (see Ferrero-Mortara et al. 1984); its generic placement in Archimediella might need revision. Archimediella dertornatior Sacco, 1895 , from the late Miocene of Stazzano ( Italy), is less slender and develops a distinct sutural ramp [see syntypes Fig. 12A View FIGURE 12 : BS.061.03.003, SL: 41.5 mm, MD: 11.0 mm, illustrated in Sacco (1895, pl. 1, fig. 38a); Fig. 12B View FIGURE 12 : BS.061.03.003bis, SL: 38.0 mm, MD: 12.0 mm, syntype illustrated in Sacco (1895, pl. 1, fig. 38b)].
Archimediella carpathica is reminiscent of A. abundans ( Handmann, 1882) in general shape and sculpture but can be separated based on its more slender profile and the less prominent B and C primary spiral cords, which have convex tops instead of forming sharp keels; moreover, the secondary spiral cords are more prominent in A. carpathica . In addition, the C spiral cord of A. carpathica is weaker on neanic whorls.
Strausz (1966) identified very slender morphotypes with prominent A spiral cord as Turritella benoisti Cossmann & Peyrot, 1922 , which was originally described from the Serravallian of Salle in France. Despite the overall similarity, the French species has higher and more convex whorls and the suture is deeper (see syntype of Turritella benoisti MNHN.F. J05849 View Materials : http://mediaphoto.mnhn.fr/media/1446626236657KcVpm2LghIcnbBzM).
Harzhauser et al. (2018) placed this species in Oligodia , but the B+C succession of primary spirals of A. carpathica differs clearly from the B–D succession of Oligodia .
Turritella sokolovi Mikhailovsky, 1903 , from the Tarkhanian (early Middle Miocene) of Tomakivka (S. Ukraine) might represent an eastern Paratethyan occurrence of A. carpathica . This name would have priority, but the fragmentary preservation does not allow a clear identification (= species inquirenda). Moreover, no types are preserved, because Mikhailovsky (1903) used only plaster casts. We were not able to locate these casts.
Paleoenvironment. The species seems to have preferred shallow marine, inner neritic and lagoonal environments, partly with sea grass meadows ( Harzhauser et al. 2018).
