Type material. According to Pavia (1976), the type specimens of Turritella fasciata Borson, 1821 and Turritella funiculata Borson, 1821 are lost. The plate caption for the specimen illustrated by Sacco (1996, pl. 3, fig 17a) as Protoma cathedralis var. funiculata , however, states: ‘es. tip. Coll. Borson’. Therefore, the specimen BS.061.07.006, stored in the collection of the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali Torino, was part of Borson’s collection and most probably represents a syntype or even the holotype. Merlino & Campanino (2002) list this specimen as syntype.

Discussion. The first description of Italian specimens that we consider as representatives of Allmonia was published by Borson (1821) as Turritella fasciata and T. funiculata from the Burdigalian of the Torino Hills. Turritella fasciata was already preoccupied for an Eocene species described by Lamarck (1804) but Turritella funiculata was an available name. Borson (1821) provided a short description and a rather sketchy illustration. Brongniart (1823) was aware of this name but rejected its use by referring to the poor illustration in Borson (1821) and synonymized these with his Turritella cathedralis . Sacco (1895) restored Borson’s taxa as variation-names (≈ subspecies) of Protoma cathedralis as exfasciata (replacement name for fasciata ) and funiculata . Cossmann (1912) and Cossmann & Peyrot (1922) argued that the Italian Miocene specimens were different from the French cathedralis and pointed out that funiculata was an available name for the Italian species. Finally, Pavia (1976) discussed funiculata as an available name to replace some of Sacco’s variety names. In respect to this literature record, Turritella funiculata cannot be treated as nomen oblitum. Sacco (1895) described numerous additional variation names of P. cathedralis , which all derive from the Burdigalian locality Baldissero in the Torino Hills ( Italy). Therefore, we tentatively treat all these taxa as morphotypes of a single, very variable species for which Turritella funiculata is the oldest available name.
Distribution. Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Burdigalian (early Miocene): Torino Hills: Baldissero ( Italy). A fragmentary specimen illustrated by Stefanini (1916) from the Tortonian of the Veneto region in northern Italy would be the stratigraphically youngest record.
