Spinonychiurus subedinensis ( Jordana & Arbea 1985) comb. nov.

( Figs 13–20 View FIGURES 13 – 20 )

Onychiurus subedinensis Jordana & Arbea 1985: 66 .

Type material. Holotype (unreproductive male) and 6 paratypes (3 females, 2 males: 1 reproductive and 1 juvenile) (mounted on one slide) Spain, Occidental Pyrenees, Brezal Zuraun (Quinto Real) 1100 m, 21.ix.1977, leg.? (preserved in the collection of the Department of Zoology and Ecology, University of Navarra).

Redescription. Color white. Length of adults: females 0.95–1.0 mm, males 0.8–0.82 mm. Body shape cylindrical with relatively long anal spines ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13 – 20 ) (ratio anal spine/inner edge of claw = 1.6). Granulation of body surface fine and uniform, distinctly stronger around pseudocelli, especially on the front of head. Antennal bases partly marked.

Antennae nearly as long as head or slightly longer. Antennal segment IV with typical subapical organite and two poorly marked cylindrical sensilla in dorsal-subapical and internal-subbasal position ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 13 – 20 ). Microsensillum on antennal segment IV in latero-external position, a little above first proximal whorl of chaetae. Antennal III sensory organ with 5 guard chaetae, 5 papillae, 2 small sensory rods and 2 bent, smooth with longitudinal ribs sensory clubs, and microsensillum located slightly below antennal III sensory organ ( Figs 15, 16 View FIGURES 13 – 20 ).

Postantennal organ consists of 18–22 granulated vesicles ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 13 – 20 ). Labial palp of A type.

Pseudocellar formula dorsally: 34/233/3-44454, ventrally: 1/000/0 0 0 0. Subcoxae1 of I–III legs with 1 pseudocellus each. Parapseudocellar formula: 1/000/ 112103 (each anal valve with parapseudocellus). Localization of parapseudocelli on abdominal sterna I/VI as in Fig. 20 View FIGURES 13 – 20 . Parapseudocelli on subcoxae1 of I–III legs invisible.

Dorsal chaetotaxy as in Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13 – 20 , nearly symmetrical, poorly differentiated into meso- and microchaetae. Thoracic tergum I with 5-6 + 5-6 chaetae. Thoracic terga II and III with microsensilla laterally. Body sensory chaetae s cylindrical, well differentiated their formula dorsally: 1/011/ 221121 and ventrally: 2/00/000100. Abdominal tergum IV with m0 and p0 chaetae. Abdominal tergum V with a0 and p0 chaetae. Abdominal tergum VI with 2 axial chaetae and 1+1 prespinal chaetae. Subcoxae1 of I–III legs with 3, 4, 4 chaetae respectively.

Thoracic sterna I–III with 0+0, 1+1, 1+1 chaetae respectively. Ventral tube of females with 6-7 + 6-7 chaetae and 1+1 chaetae at base ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 13 – 20 ). Furca reduced to small area of fine granulation and three rows of manubrial chaetae behind its posterior edge ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 13 – 20 ). Claws without teeth. Empodial appendage with small basal lamella, shorter than inner edge of claw (ratio 0.75). Tibiotarsi I–III with 11 chaetae in distal whorl ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 13 – 20 ). Male ventral organ composed of 3+3 thickened chaetae, located on posterior part of ventral tube ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 13 – 20 ).

Remarks. S. subedinesis belongs to the group of species with 11 chaetae in distal whorl of tibiotarsi. Because of relatively large anal spines is similar to S. edinensis from which it differs in the absence of 2+2 spines on abdominal tergum V, the presence of basal lamella on empodial appendage and distinct body sensory chaetae s.
