Type fixation. Holotype, male, here designated.

Etymology. The species name is from the Latin coclear meaning spoon, alluding to the characteristic broad, curved, spoon-shaped outer ramus of uropod 1.

Description (holotype, 3). Head as long as pereonite 1 and 2/3 of 2 combined along dorsal midline; brows narrow; midanterior depression moderately deep, encompassing approximately 0.5 head length. Rostrum straight, in dorsal view with nearly parallel margins, reaching beyond apices of eye lobes with about one half its length, acutely pointed. Eye lobes rounded in lateral view, lower anterior margin with a bunch of long and shorter simple seta. Head and pereon with scattered small simple setae.

Antenna 1 approximately as long as head, pereonites 1–4 and half of 5 combined, reaching to apex of antenna 2 peduncle article 4; peduncle articles 1 and 2 with dense bunches of long setae ventrally; flagellum of 7+ articles, approximately as long as peduncle articles 1 and half of 2 combined. Antenna 2 approximately as long as head, pereonites 1–7 and pleonites 1–2 combined; ventral projection of peduncle article 2 about twice as long as wide at base, tapering to rounded apex, with long setae laterally and at apex; articles 4 and 5 with ventral groups of long simple setae, densest on article 5; article 5 length 0.9 of 4; flagellum articles 1 and 2 with medium sized robust setae.

Mouthparts, mandible palp article 1with 3 dorsal groups and 3 ventral groups of long setae, apex truncate surrounded by long setae; article 2 deeply embedded in article 1 apex.

Gnathopod 1 propodus length 2.9 width, with 4 posterior robust setae. Gnathopod 2 propodus length 1.75 greatest width. Pereopods 3–4 basis with fringe of unequally long setae along anterior margin, mid posterior margin with two groups of long setae, distolateral surface with 2 long setae; merus anterior and posterior margins with 5 groups of long setae. Pereopods 5–6 basis anterior margin with 2 groups of short setae in distal half and apical tuft of long setae, posterior margin with scattered short setae. Pereopod 7 propodus anterior margin with 5–6 groups of long setae.

Uropod 1 peduncle broad, with dorsolateral row of small simple setae and a few robust setae, and single robust seta in distomedial corner; outer ramus broad, inward curved, twisted into spoon-shape (see Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 up1 lv), 0.5 length of peduncle, lateral margin with row of 8 robust setae, medial margin smooth, dorsal surface with many small simple setae; inner ramus 0.75 length of outer ramus, straight, with 2 robust setae distomedially. Uropod 2 peduncle broad, approximately half length peduncle of uropod 1, lateral margin with row of short simple setae and distolateral tuft of long setae, distomedial margin with cluster of 3 robust setae; ramus 0.45 length of peduncle, slightly spoon-shaped, reaching beyond ramus uropod 3 with its entire length, distolateral margin with 3 robust setae. Uropod 3 peduncle with poorly developed medial projection; ramus with near circle of 8–9 long simple setae. Telson width approximately 1.5 length.

Female. Similar to male except uropod 1 inner ramus and ramus uropod 2 with a few more robust setae. Size. Largest 3, 7.0 mm, largest ovigerous Ƥ, 6.1 mm.

Colour and biology. Colour not recorded. Abode aggregations may comprise one male and up to three females ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 A).

Distribution. Eastern Australia from Moreton Bay, Queensland to Bass Strait and eastern and southern Tasmania, 13.5– 40 m.
