A rare benthic species associated with muddy substrates, found in Hunan in a lake (A8) and in a pond (S32). We found only first instar females which does not retain valves from previous molts. Each seta of posterior margin of the valves bears a strong lateral spine. For detailed description see Jeong et al. (2012). Ilyocryptus raridentatus s. str. was described from Australia, morphologically similar populations were recorded from Korea, China and South-East Asia, but their identity with Australian species was not confirmed ( Jeong et al. 2012).
