Taxonomic notes:— Encyclia randii is similar to E. cordigera in floral shape and colour; both species have flowers with purplish-brown sepals and petals with undulate margins and a white lip with a central pink spot. The main differences are that E. randii has a smaller, reniform to square midlobe, whereas in E. cordigera the midlobe is larger and elliptic.
Epidendrum randianum was not validly published by Barbosa Rodrigues ( Sprunger 1996) . Because Epidendrum randianum is invalid, the combination E. randiana proposed by Withner (2000) is also invalid. Unaware of the previous lectotypification by Fowlie & Duveen (1992), Meneguzzo et al. (2010) re-lectotypified this species with the same illustration.
Encyclia randii var. rondoniensis has been recorded thus far only in Rondônia State; it is a variant of E. randii that differs in its larger midlobe, both length and width, that is square with an emarginate apex. However , this is an invalid name because the type was not designated in the protologue ( McNeill et al. 2012). The authors also failed to specify the herbarium in which the type was deposited (article 40.7).
