Pentacomia (Mesochila) smaragdula ( Dejean, 1825) View in CoL

Third Instar Larva Figs (1−9 and 16).

Material examined: Brasil, São Paulo: São José do Barreiro (Parque Nacional da Serra da Bocaina, Trilha Cachoeira das posses, 22°46'26''S; 22°46'26''W, 1,255 m), 6 larvae fixed, 10.XI.2013, Mermudes et al. col. ( DZRJ). Measurements: TL: 13−20 mm (aver. 16 mm); FW: 0.9−1.5 mm (aver. 1.2 mm); FL: 1.2−1.5 mm (aver. 1.3 mm); FWM: 2.9−3.1 mm (aver. 3 mm); PNW: 1.9−2.9 mm (aver. 2.2 mm); PNL: 2.9−3.3 mm (aver. 3.1 mm).

Color: Head and labrum dark brown, frons black. Antennae, maxilla and labium dark brown. Mandibles black. Pronotal disc dark brown to brown. Mesonotum dark brown anteriorly, light brown posteriorly. Metanotum brown anteriorly, light brown posteriorly. Setae dark brown to brown. Sclerites of abdomen light brown.

Head: Dorsal setae prominent. Stemmata consisting of two pairs: Two dorsal, well developed, and two latero −ventral, less developed. Antennae with sparse and long setae on the apical region of the antennomeres. Mandibles with three spines well developed on the dorsal side. Maxillary palpomere slightly bigger than the galea. The apical palpomere varies from palpiforme to globose in the same specimen. Galeomere II with two to three setae, varying in the same specimen. Cardo reduced, small sclerite with one dorsal long setae in the distal part of the stipes. Stipe with two stout spines and three dorsal setae, and five ventral. Labium with rectangular sclerite on ventral side between submentum and palpomere I. Mentum with one pair of setae. Labial palpomere I with seven apical setae. Palpomere II with one lateral setae.

Thorax: Pronotum wider between anterior angles, sides divergent. Pronotum with distinct anterior angles and callous elevations, and thin and brown setae. Pronotum with 58-62 pair of setae, from those 41-45 pairs of distinctive setae; 11 pairs of cephalomarginal setae; 17-19 pairs of lateral setae. Sclerites of meso and metathorax divided in the middle, wider posteriorly. With a variable number of setae, more concentrate in the anterior and posterior parts of the sclerites. Legs well developed. Coxa one third longer than femur, convergent to its apical portion. With a row of setae. Mesocoxa with small tooth on the proximal portion in the superior side. Trochanter longer than wide, lozenge in form, with sparse setae. Femur longer than wide, with two proximal setae and a row of setae in the apical portion. Tibia small, one third of the femur size, with few and stout setae. Tarsi small, less than half that the tibia size, with stout setae on the posterior margin.

Abdomen: Sclerotized areas distinct, with irregular shapes and variable number in each segment. Third tergite rectangular, with 10−15 setae. Sclerites of hump subdivided, median hooks with three setae, and inner hooks with two setae. Posterior sclerites with 21−24 setae. Postero –lateral sclerites with five setae, attached with the posterior part. Anterior part with 12−14 setae. Posterior margin of ninth eusternum with three long setae, and two long setae in the middle of the eusternum. Ventral part of the pygopod with two stout setae and many small ones. Dorsal part with 26 stout setae and a few small ones. Apex of the pygopod with 16 stout setae.

Pupa Figs (10−15 and 17)

Material examined: Brasil, São Paulo: São José do Barreiro (Parque Nacional da Serra da Bocaina, Trilha Cachoeira das posses, 22°46'26''S; 22°46'26''W, 1,255 m), 4 pupae fixed, 10.XI.2013, Mermudes et al. col. ( DZRJ) Measurements: 11−17 mm (averg. 1 5mm)

Color: Entire body white to light yellow. Eyes black. Extremities of appendices from white to black, depending on the stage of development: mandibles, labrum, legs (tarsus and trochanter).

Head: Subquadrangular and glabrous. Median frontal boss prominent, sub −quadrangular. Extending from the posterior half of the eyes to the base of antennae, not reaching the labrum, which is rounded, with distal margin unilobed, and lateral margins slightly arcuate.

Thorax: Pronotum quadrangular (1.9mm in both width and length). Anterior margin arcuate and slightly sinuate before the anterior angles, that are slightly prominent. Lateral margin also arcuate and sinuate before the anterior and posterior angles. Posterior angles prominent, more than the anterior ones. Posterior margin somewhat arcuate in the middle. Midline hardly visible. Two parallel grooves on the posterior half of the pronotum, and a fine line on the posterior half. Lateral margin with a series of variable setae. Mesonotum sub −trapezoidal, distinctly transverse, at least twice as wide as it is long. Sinuate on the distal margin. Midline not visible. Metanotum sub −trapezoidal, but less transverse then the mesonotum. Anterior and distal margins sinuated. Midline visible in all it extension.
