Taxonomy: The species was described from West Malaysia by Browne (1949). It was incorrectly transferred to Webbia by Wood and Bright (1992), but returned to Cryptoxyleborus by Bright and Skidmore (1997). The holotype (BMNH) has been examined. The species has antennae of type 1, like C. micrographus and C. opacicaudulus .
Distribution: Previously recorded from West Malaysia and Sarawak, the species is newly recorded here from Brunei Darussalam, East Malaysia (Sabah), Indonesia (Sumatera), and Thailand.

Biology: Previously recorded host trees are Dipterocarpus kunstleri King , Dryobalanops oblongifolia Dyer , Hopea ferrea Lanessan , Shorea macrophylla (de Vriese) P. S. Ashton (as S. gysbertsiana ), S. ovata Dyer ex Brandis , Shorea spp. (all Dipterocarpaceae ) ( Browne 1961; Schedl 1964; Beaver & Browne 1979). It usually attacks small stems of 4–10 cm diameter. Browne (1961) illustrates the gallery system, which is typical of the genus. Recorded brood sizes are 23 (all emerging on a single day) (Beaver & Browne 1979) and over 50 ( Browne 1961).
