Cryptoxyleborus turbineus (Sampson) View in CoL
Xyleborus turbineus Sampson, 1923:288 .
Crytpoxyleborus turbineus (Sampson) : Schedl, 1937:551.
Taxonomy: Wood and Bright (1992) state that the holotype female is in BMNH. Maiti and Saha (2004) cite a male ‘holotype’ in the Forest Research Institute, Dehra Dun. Sampson (1923) did not state the sex of the beetles that he described, although the description evidently refers to a female, and he did not designate a holotype. It appears that there are syntypes in both U.K. and India, and that a lectotype will need to be designated. The syntype in BMNH has been examined. Maiti and Saha (2004) also indicate a female ‘cotype’ in NHMW, but there is no mention of this in Schedl’s (1979) catalogue of the types in his collection, and we believe that the authors are mistaken. The male was described by Maiti and Saha (2004).
Distribution: Northeastern India (Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal), Myanmar, Philippines (Mindanao), Thailand, Vietnam. This species has a more northerly and westerly distribution than most species in the genus, and has not been recorded from Malaysia or Indonesia. (The inclusion of Malaysia in the distribution by Maiti and Saha (2004) is incorrect.)
Biology: Recorded from Pentacme suavis A. DC. and Shorea robusta Gaertn. (Dipterocarpaceae) by Beeson (1930), but there are no later host records.
