Lectotype ( D’Arcy in Woodson & Schery in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 60: 591. 1974): Herb. Clifford: 59, Capsicum 1 (BM-000558022) .

Generitype of Capsicum Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 133. 1929).

Current name: Capsicum annuum L. View in CoL ( Solanaceae ).

Note: Although D’Arcy & Eshbaugh (in Baileya 19: 98. 1974) discussed the type material, as has been pointed out by Janser. (Spices, Condiments Med. Pl. Ethiopia: 38. 1981), there is confusion as to which sheet was intended as type - the authors say that a Clifford sheet is the lectotype but also that it is on the IDC microfiche (i.e. = sheet 249.1 LINN). Janser. rejected both specimens in favour of a van Royen sheet in L. However, D’Arcy’s later 1974 type statement is unequivocal, and has priority.
