Diagnosis. Cochylidia oblonga is very similar to C. contumescens ( Meyrick, 1931) in the female genitalia, but C. oblonga has a somewhat inverted trapezoidal membranous pocket formed by the seventh sternum and a semicircular ostium bursae. In C. contumescens , the membranous pocket formed by the seventh sternum is nearly rounded, and the ostium bursae is dentate on the anterior margin and straight on the posterior margin ( Razowski 1970: Fig. 245). Cochylidia oblonga is also similar to C. contumescens in the male genitalia, with differences noted under C. contumescens .

Redescription. Adult ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 2 – 11 ): Male wingspan 9.0–12.0 mm; female wingspan 10.0–15.0 mm. Vertex and frons yellowish white. Antenna with scape yellowish white, flagellum ochreous brown. Labial palpus pale yellowish white, sparsely mixed with brown on outer surface; length about 1.5 times of diameter of compound eye. Thorax and tegula yellowish white, mixed with brown. Forewing with costal margin nearly straight; apex protruded; termen bluntly rounded, somewhat oblique. Ground color yellowish white; costal margin with a narrow brownish black stripe from base to median fascia; median fascia brownish black, from costal 3/5 extending obliquely to dorsal 1/3; subapical fascia from near apex to tornus, inconspicuous; pretornal spot black, located at dorsal 2/3; cilia pale yellowish brown. Forewing mixed with brownish black scales from base to median fascia along costal margin in female. Hindwing and cilia pale gray. Foreleg brownish black; mid- and hindlegs pale yellowish brown. Abdomen pale yellowish brown.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 12 – 17 ). Socius drooped. Median process of transtilla about 3/4 length of costal arm of valva, hooked and dentate distally, pointed at apex. Valva strongly sclerotized, nearly oval, length about 1.5 times of basal width, narrowed distally; costal margin nearly straight; ventral margin arc; apex rounded; costal arm of valva about half length of costal margin, distal half slightly dilated, haired, apex bluntly rounded. Juxta broad, somewhat Vshaped, rounded on anterior margin, slightly concave at middle on posterior margin. Phallus about 2.5 times length of costal arm of valva, with a short spine at distal 1/4 on ventral surface; cornuti deciduous, 1−3 thin spines, about 1/4 length of phallus.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 21 View FIGURE 21 – 26 ). Papilla analis about 2/3 length of apophysis posterioris. Apophysis posterioris slightly longer than apophysis anterioris and three times length of its basal plate. Sterigma developed, strongly sclerotized, nearly oval, wrinkled vertically, with tiny spines arranged in two rows at middle and a small process near middle on posterior margin; seventh stergum specially formed a membranous pocket, nearly inverted trapezoid, surrounding part of sterigma, with spine-shaped membranous process anterolaterally. Ostium bursae narrower than ductus bursae, nearly semicircular, rounded on anterior margin and nearly straight on posterior margin. Ductus bursae strongly sclerotized, about same size as sterigma; ductus seminalis arising from ductus bursae anteriorly, slightly sclerotized basally. Corpus bursae elongate oval, about three times length of ductus bursae.

Distribution. China (Anhui, Fujian, Gansu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Liaoning, Tianjin).

Remarks. The name Cochylidia oblonga was proposed by Ge (1998) in his unpublished master’s thesis. Unfortunately, the name first appeared in the book Lepidoptera from Mountain Huangshan ( Liu & Ge 1997), and the authors did not mention that it was a new species or designate types due to a possible oversight or a misprint. Therefore the name Cochylidia oblonga Liu & Ge, 1997 is a nomen nudum. Those authors have allowed us to include their description herein to formally validate the name.
