Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias as Muraenichthys macropterus by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 81), based on ZMH 15549.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 4.—General distribution: East Africa east to Marshall and Society islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia. Sand bottom near reefs, 1–20 m depth. Marine.
